🍩 BæFoLa is now Food & Language Lab 🍩

As the Bayreuth-Berlin Food and Language (BæFoLa) lectures have found a new home at the University of Greifswald, the organizers decided to rename the BæFoLa-series to Food and Language Lab.

However, the concept stays the same and we’ll again meet on the last Friday of each month of the German lecture period at our usual time (12:30-13:30 CET). Attendance is free, but participants are asked to register via a quick message. Please note that there is a new email address for the Food & Language Lab Series ([email protected]). If you are already on the mailing list, no need to register again - you will receive the abstracts, Zoom links for each talk, and also the new food and language newsletter automatically.

Season 11 features the following four delicious talks:

October 30, 12:30-13:30 CET: Todd Allen (Kansai University): Food, Drink and the Making of Hospitality in Japan’s Small Bars and Izakaya

November 27, 12:30-13:30 CET: Paul Victor Patinadan (Nanyang Technological University): Echoing Food Voices: Cooking, Eating, and Savouring in Singaporean Palliation and Bereavement Care

December 18, 12:30-13:30 CET: Eva Triebl (University of Vienna): "If I Ate That, I Would Be Huge": Appetite Displays and the Management of Thinness Online

January 29, 12:30-13:30 CET: Ashli Stokes (University of North Carolina at Charlotte): Communicating Scotland through Food: From Devolution to Possible Futures

Feel free to forward the program (and the attached poster) to your students as well as interested colleagues. We'd be delighted to see you at the Food & Language Lab! 🍩

📢LingLab & Team English Linguistics Get-Together 🍝

Two days ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming our former colleague Sofia (FU Berlin) for the final LingLab of this semester. In her talk, "Feasting for the Feed: Discourses of Carnivalesque Consumption on YouTube", she shared the latest developments from her DFG-funded research project.

Having followed the project from its early stages, it was especially exciting to see how the first findings have come together to paint a compelling picture of the linguistic patterns behind different kinds of food-related YouTube content.

After the talk, we rounded off the evening with a shared dinner. It was a wonderful way to conclude this semester's LingLab series and to celebrate the end of the current summer semester.

Thank you, Sofia, for the inspiring talk! We wish everyone a wonderful summer, a well-deserved break, and look forward to seeing you all again next semester! 🙂☀

Markus Bieswanger and Johannes Trüdinger organized the first "International Applied Linguistics Conference on Aviation English Research” (IALCAER), which took place at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, from June 26 to 28, 2026. (https://lnkd.in/eVdXCBc9)

More than a dozen of the world’s leading researchers on Aviation English gathered at the University of Bayreuth to present and discuss their work. The organizers would like to thank our incredible keynote speaker Cordula Pflaum, the co-convenors of the AILA Research Network "Applied Linguistics and Aviation English(es)” Malila Prado and Eric Friginal, and all of the presenters (see link above for presentation schedule) for making the conference such a huge success, despite the record-breaking heat.

The presenters' insights, energy, and dedication turned every session into something truly memorable and will keep fueling innovation in Aviation English research long after the closing remarks. ✈️

The conference on the Bayreuth campus was a excellent opportunity to experience and interact with some of the most prominent researchers in the field in person, and we are very happy that some colleagues and students followed the invitation to attend. 🙂

From 15–18 June, Julia Reinhardt-Beiersdorfer from Team English Linguistics attended ICEHL-23, the 23rd International Conference on English Historical Linguistics, hosted by the University of Milan, Italy.

Over four inspiring days, scholars from around the world came together in Milan to exchange ideas and present their latest research in English Historical Linguistics. The rich and engaging program included three plenary talks and more than 130 presentations across eleven thematic panels, covering a wide range of linguistic areas: from phonology to conventionalized multi-word constructions and from variation over time and corpora to teaching the history of English.

Julia contributed to the conference with her paper “Before pollution: Lexical frames of environmental harm in Early Modern English”, which offered insights into historical environmental discourse.

Milan welcomed participants not only with a rich academic program but also with truly hot summer weather ☀

A big thank you to the organizing committee at the University of Milan for hosting such a stimulating event 💐

Last week, Markus Bieswanger had the opportunity to present on possible contributions of Applied Linguistics at the meeting of the "Global Action Plan for the Prevention of Airborne Conflict“ (GAPPAC) working group at the EUROCONTROL headquarters in Brussels. GAPPAC focuses on reducing the risk of midair collisions in aviation.

He is grateful to his co‑presenters Elizabeth Mathews and Flávio Antonio Coimbra Mendonca Ph.D., MSc., MBA., FRAeS. (both Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University), and to Tzvetomir Blajev (EUROCONTROL) and John Wennes (CANSO) for organizing such a powerful event.

It’s encouraging to see so many people with diverse backgrounds dedicated to moving this important work forward. The GAPPAC initiative highlights the real‑world impact we can achieve when expertise, collaboration, and commitment come together.
