The Chair of African Legal Studies at the University of Bayreuth invites expressions of interest for its upcoming podcast series, hosted by Prof. Dr. Thoko Kaime. Running from June to November 2026, „Africa In Context” bridges academic scholarship with the societal, cultural, and economic realities of contemporary Africa, countering traditional Eurocentric frameworks.

TGCL Call for Applications for Scholarships for the Academic Year 2026-2027

The Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies (TGCL) invites applications for LL.M. and Ph.D. programmes in East African Community & Regional Integration Law at the University of Dar es Salaam.

Applications are invited from candidates from the East African Community Partner States (i.e. Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia. Scholarships cover tuition, health insurance & part of accommodation.

The deadline is 18th August 2026.

On 21 July 2026, the Chair of African Legal Studies at the University of Bayreuth had the pleasure of hosting the FAU Summer School “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Human Rights” for a day in Bayreuth. The 25 participants explored the role and significance of regional human rights systems through an introduction to the African, European, and Inter-American human rights systems. This was followed by an interactive workshop on climate change and regional human rights protection, though which the participants examined the pending Advisory Opinion of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the human rights obligations of African states in addressing the climate crisis (Request No. 001/2025). The day concluded with discovering the beautiful Bayreuth campus and city and a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Margravial Opera House. Many thanks to BAYHOST and the FAU team, especially Elzbieta Garza and Patrik Stör for the excellent cooperation and organization throughout the Summer School.

Happy Nelson Mandela International Day

On , the Chair of African Legal Studies reflects on a legacy that sits at the heart of our work: law as an instrument of justice, dignity, and transformation. Mandela was, above all, a lawyer, one who understood both the violence law can do and the freedom it can secure.

As we research, teach, and engage with legal systems across the African continent, his example reminds us that scholarship is never neutral. It is a contribution to the world we choose to build.

The Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies (TGCL) is pleased to announce an upcoming conference on Regional Integration and Artificial Intelligence, taking place on 08-09 July 2026 at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The workshop is supported by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung country office in Tanzania and will bring together scholars, legal professionals, policymakers, civil society representatives, and innovators to discuss the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence in the context of regional integration, governance, and sustainable development.

Next Stop: Tanzania!

The Chair of African Legal Studies is pleased to participate in the upcoming conference on Regional Integration and Artificial Intelligence, taking place from 08–09 July 2026 at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Organized by the TGCL and generously supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS Country Office Tanzania), this workshop will bring together scholars, legal professionals, policymakers, and innovators. The discussions will focus on the distinct opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence presents for regional integration, governance, and sustainable development.

We look forward to contributing to these crucial academic dialogues and bringing valuable insights back to our research at the chair.

We are currently inviting expressions of interest from expert lawyers, academics, artists, and practitioners well-versed in these thematic areas.

Key Information:
• Timeline: Recording sessions will commence this July; this call remains open for a two-week period.
• Logistics: In-person recording takes place at the University of Bayreuth, with a travel stipend of approximately €25 allocated per interviewee.
• Availability: Due to a condensed seven-episode production schedule, available guest slots are strictly limited.
