Canada has selected Germany’s TKMS Type 212CD as the preferred platform for its future fleet of up to 12 submarines, marking a major milestone in the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project. The decision reflects Ottawa’s focus on strengthening Arctic operations, improving interoperability with NATO partners, and modernizing the Royal Canadian Navy with a proven next-generation design. Built through a partnership involving Germany and Norway, the Type 212CD offers advanced underwater endurance, low acoustic signature, and capabilities suited for challenging northern environments.
Canadian officials also highlighted the long-term industrial and economic benefits expected from the partnership, including technology collaboration, workforce development, and sustained support throughout the submarines’ service life. The program is intended to replace the aging Victoria-class fleet while expanding Canada’s maritime readiness across the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic regions. The selection underscores Canada’s commitment to strengthening allied cooperation and investing in modern naval capabilities that support future defense requirements.
