Amerikanistik Bamberg

This New App Created in Collaboration With the Rainy Lake Ojibwe Community Aims to Preserve Indigenous Language and Knowledge Users can browse traditional stories, learn more about notable landmarks and discover family connections

“Our most ancient spiritual and ceremonial traditions honor the earth and the heavens,” says Mario Martinez (Pascua Yaqui).

The artist often informs his paintings with celestial and cosmological themes from traditional Yaqui stories. Large, colorful flowers may represent blessings and a sun radiating light suggests the shimmering, animating qualities of life energy. Flowers appear in a number of Martinez's work and may reference the concept of the "sea ania", or the flower world, one of a number of overlapping worlds that make up the universe in Yaqui spiritual cosmology.

Martinez was born in 1953 in Penjamo, the smallest of six Yaqui settlements outside of Scottsdale, Arizona. He attended the School of Art at the Arizona State University and then received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Since the early 1990s, his work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions and can be found in the collections of museums and galleries around the country, including the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. Today, Martinez lives and works in New York City.

CONGRATULATIONS: Katharine Wilson honored for conference paper

In July 2026, our colleague Katharine Wilson, M.A. was named first runner-up for the International Crime Fiction Association (ICFA) Best Early Career Researcher (ECR) Paper Award.

Her paper, titled “The True and the Not True and the Might as Well be True”: Unreliable Narration and Female Authorship in Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl and Colleen Hoover's Verity, was honored in connection with the thirteenth Captivating Criminality conference.

Congratulations and we cannot wait to see what comes next!
