This is what a preschooler looks like doing Kumon. 😍

L turned 6 yo in August and still has 1 more year of Kindergarten. Since February she has gotten very comfortable around numbers and counting, and her self confidence coming from the feeling of competence has soared. She has learned a lot more than Math with Kumon.

Our “town”, the places in and around Stuttgart, has a very big expatriate community. A good number of families who attend at our center are here because of work and most move on to other assignments in distant shores within a couple of years.

We said goodbye to these trio last month. Tears were shed 🥺 on both sides. It wasn’t easy. It is never easy.

For these three, at least, there is Kumon where they are going. Their learning journey will continue.

I told the young lady, to make ourselves feel better, that maybe she will come back and we’ll see each other again. She brightened up and said: can I be a Kumon teacher? (My heart swelled 🥰, but I cried more.)

These three cuties are siblings, ages 5 to 8. They all got gold last Wednesday, which means they’re doing Math exercises at least two grade levels ahead of their actual grade. The two youngest are still in preschool but already mastering two digit addition and subtraction and multiplication! They started Kumon in the US- and continued their training here without skipping a beat! Good job guys!

Spencer has been our student at Kumon Boeblingen since we opened in 2019. Every year he has earned a medal doing Kumon Maths. He also now works a couple of hours a week at the center checking workbooks.

What makes Kumon different from tutoring?

With Kumon, the goal is long term. Though improvements in school performance will typically be observed pretty shortly.

Why is the distinction in goals the key to understanding what we do at Kumon? Because it is the reason why we won’t necessarily be repeating what your child’s teacher is doing at school. Instead, we find out if there are foundational weaknesses that make current grade Maths and English difficult. Figuratively, in a boat that’s filling up with water, we cover the holes first.

What happens next when the holes are plugged up? It is when real self confidence in children happens. It is experiencing for themselves that that they can swim on their own that cements it.

And on top of the Math and English skills, they will acquire self learning skills, independent study habits, based on the template of the Kumon Method.

And next? If we do it right, our students do faster than school. Our long term students, those who have been doing Kumon for over a year, will usually be a grade (or more) ahead than school curriculum. So, yes again, they won’t be doing what they’re supposed to be doing in school. Koru Kumon created the learning program for his son with the aim of getting him through to University. This was in 1954. Over 70 years later, Kumon is in 60 countries with 24,000 centers, and over 4 million students enrolled.
