Pictures of our new high pressure pumps. They can pump 100 litres of water per minute at 200-400 bar pressure. They are therefore suitable for fracking.

The E-TEST project is carried out within the framework of the Interreg V-A Euregio Meuse-Rhine program, which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with 7.5 million euros. By allocating EU funds to Interreg projects, the European Union is investing directly in economic development, innovation, territorial development, social inclusion and education in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. Further funding is provided by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Province of Flemish Brabant, the Province of Belgian Limburg, the Province of Dutch Limburg, Flanders and Wallonia.

Under the leadership of the University of Liège, 11 universities and research institutions from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany will carry out a feasibility study to determine whether the Einstein telescope can be built in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. For this purpose, the E-TEST project will take an inventory of the underground in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. The geological investigations will start in mid-2020 and should be completed by the end of 2022. A monitoring system and a geological model will be set up. This will allow geological aspects such as groundwater levels and earthquakes to be modelled, simulated and predicted. The aim of the project is to find the best possible location for the Einstein telescope in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine.

The consortium consists of the following universities and research institutions: Université de Liège, RWTH Aachen, UHasselt, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, NMWP Management GmbH, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V., KU Leuven, Nikhef, KNMI, UCLouvain und Universität Maastricht. In addition, numerous German, Belgian and Dutch companies and other research institutions and universities from the three countries have promised their support for the project.

With this equipment we can conduct fibre optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) in boreholes up to 300m deep. A heat pulse unit and a hybrid cable configuration (optical fibre + electrical conductor) allow for enhanced thermal test, too.

Important announcement for our students

Alaska field trip 18/10/2019

Back in late August 2019, Anja Dufresne and Pooya Hamdi from LIH visited Grewingk Lake and Glacier across the Bay from Homer, Alaska to investigate the response of rock slopes to glacier retreat. The trip was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) to support the initiation of international collaborations. During our visit, we hiked to the scarp of a roughly three million cubic meter landslide, which failed in 1967 and produced a tsunami in the proglacial lake and delta. The survey was organized by Bretwood Higman from Ground Truth Trekking and we were joined by Edward Berg, professor at University of Alaska, Kenai Peninsula College, by local artist Kim McNett (Kim's Nature Drawings, check out her post from 30 August), and by scientist, systems and sustainability expert Andrew Mattox.
