Valeč is an important Bohemian Baroque cultural landscape: we update the latest research and interp

The composed landscape of the palace of Valec provides an excellent laboratory for exploring the development of the Baroque period in the Czech republic. The Bohemian Baroque is an understudied period in cultural landscape development, and while it was strongly influenced by the Italian Baroque and French Formal precedents, it developed as a distinctive style reflective of the region's political,

social, religious and cultural history. This page reports on the results of ongoing research, as well as the annual field school at the site held by the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Czech University of Life Sciences, under professors Elizabeth Brabec and Kristina Janeckova, and PhD student Sage Sluter.

Wildflowers blooming at Valec at the beginning of July. Turk's cap lily (Lilium martagon), Chrysanthemum sp., Bellflower (campanula rapumculoides), Clusterhead pink (Dianthus carthusianorum), Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), Common chicory (Cichorium intybus), St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum). Chamomile, Chicory and St. John's wort are all medicinal herbs.
