HOW TO ENTERTAIN A ONE YEAR OLD CHILD?

I have a one year old daughter and I feel that I’m not able to entertain her and keep her attention for more than two or three minutes. Everything we do together lasts only a very short while – reading, building towers or drawing. Is it normal? Can I please have your advise?

Of course it is normal that such a small child can’t be attentive for very long. If you want her to enjoy playing with you, try firstly observing her interests (what she is playing with at the moment), slowly join in, ask her questions, practice communication in this area and give her small tasks related to her interest. It is very important to stay calm and patient, while positively encouraging her, helping a little bit if necessary and praising her efforts. She can only join in for a little while. If she feels well, is not being pressurised and is suitably encouraged, her interest and focused attention on the current activity, will grow. Children are the mirrors of their parents. It is worth being a role model to your child even in this area. It is great that you are keen to spend time with your daughter.

Beach vacationing with a toddler is not the same vacation I took pre-baby. Back then I had 10 swimsuits and they all fit and all I cared about packing was snacks, water, and a towel. Post-baby beach vacationing, whether it’s for a week or a weekend, the packing list has gone from 3 important items to about 50! It’s enough to drive anyone crazy!
