What are the differences between American and British English? I get this question all the time. I never really have a good answer for this other than a few basic things that nearly everyone knows.

But, I've just finished the film Gambit. I had never heard of this film until today. The film is about a plan to sell a forged painting. I watched it with English subtitles and was able to both hear and see a nice contrast to an female American Texas account and British as I would think to hear it in London.

The differences were pretty interesting for me. The film had a nice twist in the end and it sure was a relief to see a film with zombies, guns, blood or lots of fighting. A super Coen Brothers film :)

I have mixed feelings about our collective current understanding of copyright infringement. But this seems to me to be blatantly obvious that a HUGE publishing company (many of which I don't support at all) is taking material from a smaller publisher and claiming it as their own. The smaller company is English Out There (EOT)...the bigger company is the corporate giant Oxford University Press (OUP). Please take 20 seconds to sign this petition. Thanks, Glenn.

Twurdy is an interesting Search Engine which could be used to find English articles for YOUR reading level. It is based on Google. I'd love to know what you think.

Twurdy is actually based on Google, but it analyses Google results for readability, so it can help you to find more lower level texts for learners without you having to read through every result from Google to see if it's simple enough.

A little something for weekend inspiration. David Blaine is a modern-day magician. In this video he explains, in wonderfully clear American English, how he held his breath for over 17 minutes underwater. He also discusses several of his other magic tricks he has performed over the years. This video from TED MED has 2 things for you!!! 1. it is subtitles in many languages. Just hover your mouse over the screen and choose your language. And 2. it has an interactive transcript. Just click "show transcript" and choose your language. The awesome thing about the transcript is that if you don't understand a sentence, you can click on the sentence in the transcript and the video will automatically jump the the sentence you clicked on. I should research the origins of words (etymology) more often. I have often been confused by the multiple meanings of some words in Czech like "šťestí" which can mean "happiness", "good fortune" or "luck" in English. Today I learned that 500+ years ago these words used to have the same meaning in English. Now I am not so confused anymore :)
