MEDIA | Alžběta Ressnerová explains the CRISPR "genetic scissors" treatment on Czech national radio and discusses the ethical dimension of gene therapy 🧬

The young scientist was invited by Lucie Výborná to talk on Český rozhlas - Radiožurnál about the revolutionary method of "genetic scissors" CRISPR-Cas9 which can "cut out" a harmful gene mutation and cure otherwise terminally ill patients. The method has already entered clinical practice, for example, in the UK and the US, for the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD) ✂

Alžběta herself is designing "trolleys" to safely transport CRISPR to genes. She is currently finishing her PhD studies on this topic at C E I T E C Brno University of Technology "Ideally, CRISPR would help save lives regardless of social status," the scientist hopes. At the same time, she wonders about the ethical dimension of gene therapy and questions how far genetic engineering could and should actually go ⚖️

Mladá vědkyně přijala pozvání Lucie Výborné z Českého rozhlasu a vysvětluje revoluční metodu „genetických nůžek“ CRISPR-Cas9, které umí „vystřihnout“ škodlivou mutaci genu a vyléčit jinak nevyléčitelně nemocné pacienty. Metoda se dostala do klinické praxe např. v Británii a v Americe pro léčbu srpkovité anémie ✂

Alžběta sama se zabývá výzkumem „vozíčků“, které by CRISPR ke genům bezpečně dopravily. Na C E I T E C Vysoké učení technické v Brně aktuálně ukončuje PhD studium na toto téma. „V ideálním případě by CRISPR pomáhal zachraňovat životy bez ohledu na sociální postavení,“ doufá vědkyně. Zároveň se pozastavuje nad etickým rozměrem genové terapie a pokládá si otázky, kam až by vlastně genové inženýrství mohlo a mělo jít ⚖️

💚It is an annual tradition that our PhD committee organises a PhD Retreat. But what’s new this year is that we’ve also joined up with Postdocs! 🙌🏻

This chance brought us the opportunity to meet our colleagues from different institutes and also get to know each other. 👨🏽‍🔬👩‍🔬 Therefore, it opened some new collaborations and friendships.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend! There were about 100 of you. Wow! 🤯

Hello! Today, we want to introduce you the one and only CEITEC PhD committee chair, Jorge Andres Navarro Giraldo 🤴🏽.

Jorge, big thanks for everything that you are doing! 🙏🏻

🔸Research group: Magneto-Optical and THz Spectroscopy, Dr. Petr Neugebauer
🔸I focus on two topics: The first is the study of graphene and graphite using magneto-optical methods. By analyzing how the materials absorb microwaves at different magnetic fields, we obtain their electronic properties in a fast and non-invasive way compared to conventional methods that require lithography and metallic contacts. The second topic is the study of magnetic molecules by theoretical calculations. I use numerical methods to compute the magnetic properties of those molecules, which are then corroborated experimentally by my colleagues. Those molecules are interesting because they can be applied in next-generation technologies like qubits.

🤝Meet our another member: Anna Cherian 👩‍🔬 Social media manager 🫂

🔸 RNA & Immunity group - Mary Anne Connell 🧬
🔸 I work on the RNA editing enzyme ADAR1. When an infection strikes our body, our cells fight back with an interferon storm. But what happens if, even after the intruder has been destroyed, the cells don't know to stop? ⛔ADAR1 regulates this very switch. And I study how post-translational modifications regulate this function of the enzyme.
🔸 I think having hobbies and time for yourself 🧘‍♀️ is an integral part of taking care of your mental health, so I've dabbled in a bunch of different things: singing and drawing. I'm a beginner at crocheting and playing my ukulele. I had fostered a cat for 5 months, and he has just been adopted. While it was hard, I recommend fostering to anyone with some time and love 💕 to share.

🤩I'm usually in the lab or my office on the University Campus at Bohunice, so you can catch me there or email me. I'm always happy to talk and share little tips I've figured out from having made a small home in Brno for about a year and a half now. 😎

PhD Retreat 2022 is successfully behind us and we hope you had as much fun as we did!
We thank all our keynote speakers: Andrew Miller, Eric Glowacki, Gabriel Demo, Jan Macák, Lenka Zajíčková and Jiří Sedmík, for sharing their amazing projects and useful advice with us. We also want to thank all of the students who attended the Retreat and helped to create a great atmosphere. The Retreat provided us with an opportunity to enjoy scientific discussion, as well as to have lots of fun during the Retreat pub quiz and karaoke in the evening. We believe that many of us came back not only with contacts to potential future collaborators but also with new good friends. Last but not least, we want to thank our sponsors for their support which helped us make this amazing event possible.
