Temporary restorations are often underestimated. They shouldn’t be.
For many clinicians, provisional restorations are simply a bridge between tooth preparation and the final ceramic work. In reality, they are an essential part of the treatment itself.
Well-designed temporaries protect prepared teeth, condition the soft tissues, allow us to evaluate esthetics, phonetics, and function, and provide valuable clinical feedback before the definitive restorations are fabricated.
In this case, we followed a two-stage provisional protocol.
Chairside temporaries were used to initiate soft tissue conditioning immediately after preparation. Once the tissues became healthy and stable, they were replaced with milled PMMA laboratory temporaries for a comprehensive esthetic and functional test drive before the final ceramics.
The condition of the soft tissues at the end of the provisional stage is rarely accidental - it is the result of careful planning and meticulous ex*****on.
