It is with deep sadness that we have received the news of the sudden passing of Professor Pavel Jungwirth, a distinguished Czech scientist and physical chemist.

Pavel Jungwirth was a graduate of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University and was one of the most respected figures in Czech and international science. His research focused, among other areas, on molecular simulations of ions at aqueous interfaces and modelling interactions between ions and biomolecules in solutions.

Charles University extends its sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, colleagues, students and all those who had the opportunity to know and work with him.

May his memory be honoured.

In cooperation with the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University has put into operation the most powerful 🔹 helium liquefier 🔹 in the Czech Republic for scientific use. With an output of 57 litres of liquid helium per hour, it can liquefy up to 70,000 m³ of gaseous helium annually. Scientists will also use the facility to reliquefy and recycle this noble gas from laboratories.

Researchers from Matfyz published a study in the journal 🔹 Nature Communications 🔹 describing a significant experimental breakthrough. Based on their measurements, it is now possible to distinguish between left- and right-handed magnetic waves in a newly identified class of magnetic materials, so-called altermagnets, using X-rays.

Big success for Matfyz! 🎉
At Sunday’s Neuron Prize ceremony, our scientists received four awards in total.

Heartfelt congratulations to mathematician Erin Claire Carson, physicist Michal Vališek and theoretical computer scientist Václav Rozhoň. This trio of young Matfyz researchers accepted their prestigious prizes at the Prague Planetarium, where the Neuron Foundation honours top Czech scientists every year.

A special prize for science popularization was also awarded to our astrophysicist Jiří Grygar. 👏

Not all earthquakes make the headlines, but even the small ones can reveal big secrets about what is happening beneath our feet. 📈📉

In a new study published in Nature Communications, researchers from Matfyz and Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) present a new method to study weak earthquakes, offering a window into the fine-scale physical processes that govern tectonic ruptures.

“Mathematics in Bonn is world-renowned. It is one of the best opportunities that Europe has to offer in the field of mathematics,” says Filip Filipi, a graduate of Matfyz, who has been studying for a doctoral degree at the University of Bonn in Germany in the field of combinatorics since September 2025. 🧮

Securing a position abroad is not always easy, as he himself confirms. His path to top-level research was supported not only by long-term preparation and strong backing from Matfyz lecturers, but also by a great deal of determination and a willingness to make compromises.

🟩 Putting effort into a thesis can surely pay off. A work by Jan Borecký, our Computer Science student, entitled Audio-Based Navigation for Visually Impaired Play in Open-World Games, was awarded the Matfyz Dean’s Award in a category of Computer Science for its innovation and contribution.

🟩 Its quality lies both in ex*****on and social inclusion, as Borecký’s thesis offers a way to make open-world games accessible to visually impaired people. He used sound as a source of information that provides players with spatial data, enabling them to navigate accordingly. An experimental playtest he designed proved that sound-based navigation can be effective even in complex environments and enables virtual interaction between sighted and visually impaired players in a shared world.
