Spoken language. Разговорный русский. Услышать и сказать. Lesson 1. Чё, Что за..., Звякнуть, Здрасьте, Давай! Офигеть!

Not to sound like a book and not to get stuck in a conversation, remember: it's both, pronounciation and vocabulary.
Here are some important words and their spoken variations:
1) Чё?/Чего? [чиво] = Что? these forms are very common, but they are informal. Try not to use them yourself, but be ready to hear them a lot, especially from younger generation.
2) Что за... (человек/песня/марка и т.д.) = Какой/какая/какое это ... (человек/песня, марка и т.д.) This is very common expression usually not mentioned in textbooks. it is neutral equivalent to Какой in questions.
3) Звякнуть (звякну, звякни) = позвонить. This is an informal (but used in spoken Russian at work) synonym of Позвонить (Perf., to call).
4) Те = тебе (Я те звякну вечерком); Здрасьте = Здравствуйте. These short forms are very common, don't be afraid to use them, but remember, that they are informal.
5) Давай! = Пока! - This is an informal way of ending a conversation, also on the phone.
6) Офигеть! = Ого! Я удивлён! - this is an expression of surprise, very common, but also very informal. Be aware of it, and only use with friends.

Verb aspects. What is your trouble pair? Покупать-Купить (to buy, to purchase) is usually problematic, so let's look at them closer.
Моя жена купила еще одни туфли! Она покупает их каждую неделю! Я купил ботинки год назад, а сейчас я хочу купить машину! Но если она будет покупать туфли так часто, то я не смогу купить даже продукты!
Покупать is Imperfective, used to describe repeated situations (like habits: Она всегда покупает косметику в этом магазине - She always buys cosmetics from this store) or current events (-Что ты делаешь? -Я в магазине, покупаю продукты). Instead, Perfective Купить is focused on a result - in the past or in the future: remember!!! Купить, like other Perfectives, does not have Present tense! E.g. Мой друг купил себе новый IPhone! Нам нужно молоко, я куплю его после работы.
Remember, that this pair is an exception from the rule, that verbs with prefixes (like по-) are Perfective. Покупать is Imperfective!
Use the following trick to memorize this: make your own example using this aspect pair on the topic that is your pain. Shoes? New IPhone? Apartment? Car? Something you buy or would love to buy. Get it controlled with your teacher and use it as a sample in the future. Remember: examples that reflect your life will 100% stick in your memory as they will be part of your life!

How do you address a stranger?
There is a lacuna in Russian language: we lack the words like 'madame', 'sir', 'signor', 'mademoiselle', etc. in other languages. Long period of tsar empire and then abrupt society changes after 1917 resulted in no words to use to be polite (as all of them contain good or bad connotations). Russian speakers themselves struggle to communicate with strangers. Here are useful tips to avoid awkward situations:
* It is quite common to use "Девушка!" and "Молодой человек!" We laugh, that there are "девушка"s until 80 y.o. Also, sometimes a lady can get upset if you address her not "девушка!" but "женщина!". These women!!
"Молодой человек" is only applicable to truly young men.
* Don't say 'Мадам!" and "Мэм!" No one will appreciate this, it sounds like a bad joke.
* Don't use the exclamation "Hey!" ("Эй!") - it is very impolite for a Russian ear.
* "Женщина! and "Мужчина!" are used by Russian speakers, but are impolite and undesirable. This is an extreme situation if you wnt to attract attention in the street, for example.
So what's the verdict?
* Use polite words "Извините", "Простите" and then phrases "Вы не скажете...?" "Вы не знаете...?" etc. to start a conversation. This is totally polite and safe, although impersonal.
And don't get surprised if some old lady or an old gentleman says "Дочка", "Сынок" or even "Внучка" or "Внучек" to you. This is common with the older generation and, even informal, it really comes from the heart!

Verbs of Motion: Lesson 1.
Do you love the Verbs of Motion as much as we do? :D Let's look at 4 basic verbs, идти-ходить, ехать-ездить (all of them 'to go' in English!)
How do you pick the correct one?
* is motion performed by a person or a mean of transport? (идти/ходить for a person: (ехать/ездить by transport)
* is motion taking place now/in the nearest future ( идти/ехать) or regularly (ходить/ездить)?
* what verbal markers do you have to define motion? (сейчас, завтра, сегодня вечером for идти & ехать; and обычно, часто, иногда, каждый вторник for ходить & ездить)
There are many more markers to help you choose the correct verb.
For instance, you'd say 'Сегодня вечером я иду в театр' ('I'm going to the theatre tonight') using "идти" even if you have to take a taxi to get there. That will apply to all cultural events.
Now try to fill in the gaps with these verbs:
1) Ты __________ на концерт сегодня вечером?
2) Мы __________ в Берлин в четверг.
3) Обычно летом она ______ на море.
4) Каждый день я _____ на работу.
5) Он сейчас ________ на машине.
6) Он не часто ________ на метро.
