February 25th our master Du Fukun has passed.

Way of internal arts is not as difficult as many often believes.
While in external arts master walks the path behind the student keeping him on track sometimes makes student go faster or slower as he decides in internal arts master walks in front of the student leading the way.

But this way master can't always see which way his students are going nor he can always determinate if the path they choose is right or wrong.

So you are on your own.

When you focus on the master you stumble on the path.
If you focus on the path you lose the sight of the master and suddenly you realise you don't know where you are going.

There is one main obstacle in internal arts way.
Sometimes student tries to find his own way or tries to find a shortcut and get lost.
Because there are no shortcuts.

When student gets lost some masters go back for him, some masters wait and some masters keeps going and trust that student finds his way and catches up eventually.
My master was never good at waiting.
And many students got lost on the way.
But master was one of last titans of this art.
Easy to see from far, choosing a simple patch and leaving sharp and deep footprints easy to follow for those who cares to search for them.
And for that we are eternally grateful.

Today I would like to share my experience with my grandmaster Zhang Baoyang.
He was a true gentleman and scholar but when it came to fighting his attitude changed.
Sometimes when I practiced with him he wanted to show me how to use some technique or principle.
Unlike many other teachers he never told me what I'm supposed to do or how to attack him. He just said "attack me" or he simply attacked first.
At first I was careful and holding back because he was already old when I met him for the first time but I immediately realised it was a mistake I should not repeat.
What surprised me was that it was never the first move he wanted to show me. It was just an opening.
Second move was challenging but interesting was the third move. That was the important one.
It was not easy to get to the third move because the second move was changing as I changed my response to the opening move and it often took me more attempts to get past the second move.
During the years I managed to get past the third move couple of times but the fourth move wasn't actually interesting for me at all because I never knew what happened or how he struck me. Every time that happened I thought I have everything under control that I got it figured and I finally got the upper hand. Right before I got hit.
So when I think about my grandmaster I always think about the third move.

To be honest the video was shot about 5 years ago and when I watch it today I'm not really satisfied (I'd like to think it is because of progress I've made) but if I wait to make a perfect video it would never be published.
If anyone believes he can do it better please send me the video and I will post it.
