How are AI, automation and digital technologies reshaping education, science and work?

A major research project led by Prof. Štěpán Jurajda (CERGE-EI) is investigating some of the most pressing questions raised by technological change:

👉 Can AI support students’ creativity rather than simply provide ready-made answers?
👉 How do digital skills develop—and could unequal access deepen gender gaps?
👉 Does the way research is funded change scientists’ behaviour?
👉 Do robots replace workers, or do firms that adopt new technologies become more competitive?
👉 Could AI help unemployed people find jobs more effectively?
👉 And why is access to anonymised public data essential for evidence-based policymaking?

The project New Technologies and Transformations of Education, Research and the Labour Market, funded through the Programme Jan Amos Comenius (OP JAK), brings together quantitative and qualitative research across education, science and the economy.

Migration is often discussed through assumptions — but what does the evidence actually show?

In a new episode of Talking Economics, CERGE-EI Assistant Professor Achim Ahrens joins host Katarina Stehlíková Štěpánková to discuss migration, refugees and labour market integration.

Ahrens explains why refugees differ from regular economic migrants, how uncertainty and legal restrictions affect their labour market prospects, and what his research from Switzerland reveals about policies that limit access to work.

The findings are clear: employment bans, resident-prioritisation rules, sector restrictions and geographic limits can reduce both employment and earnings among refugees — with effects lasting even after restrictions are lifted.

The episode also looks at Ukrainian refugees in Europe, including why employment rates in Czechia are much higher than in Switzerland, and why job quality remains an important challenge.
