💎 Did you know that the roots of today’s Mineralogical Museum of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, reach back to the 18th century?

As early as 1775, the imperial and royal natural history cabinet Museum naturae Pragense was established at the Prague university. Today, the Mineralogical Museum of the Faculty of Science, Charles University, draws on these historic collections, cared for by the Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Mineral Resources.

🌍 The collections received special attention from the botanist and versatile natural scientist Jan Svatopluk Presl. Together with his brother Karel Bořivoj Presl, he laid the foundations for their systematic care by establishing the first inventory book.

👂 What can be hidden in the inner ear?

For example, information about the history of prehistoric populations dating back tens of thousands of years.

🔬 An international team involving researchers from Charles University analysed the bony labyrinth of nearly 150 individuals from Africa and Eurasia.

The results revealed considerable biological diversity among prehistoric populations in northeastern Africa, as well as population changes that took place there over more than 40,000 years.

🦴 The research also shows that the shape of the bony labyrinth can help reconstruct population history even where ancient DNA has not been preserved.

The study also included findings from the Sabaloka Mountains in Sudan, investigated by the Czech Institute of Egyptology at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University.

🩸 Blood is needed. Maybe yours.

Summer is a time for holidays, trips and rest. But during the summer months, blood supplies are often at their lowest, while hospitals need blood just as much as ever.

Accidents, surgeries and necessary transfusions do not stop for the summer. Ústav hematologie a krevní transfuze - ÚHKT currently needs blood donors with blood types A and 0 the most, especially 0 Rh negative. One whole blood donation takes only a few minutes and can help up to four patients.

📍 You can donate blood at the ÚHKT donation centre every working day from 7:00 to 10:30. Both regular donors and first-time donors are welcome. All you need is your ID card, health insurance card and the willingness to do something that can make a real difference to someone else. ❤️

🔬 FameLab 2026: Echoes of the Future

The future begins with curiosity. And curiosity will take centre stage at the final of the 16th edition of FameLab Czech Republic - Česká republika!

Ten young scientists will have just 3 minutes to present their research, captivate the audience and impress the jury. The jury will decide who will represent the Czech Republic in the international FameLab final.

But the final evening will be about more than just the competition. You can also look forward to:

Charles University’s 30,000th Erasmus student!

Matěj Prokopič from CU ARTS and CU MATHPHYS has already gained two international experiences during his studies – a study stay at Sorbonne University in Paris and a traineeship in Lisbon, where he worked as a Czech language teacher. Upon returning from Portugal, he became the 30,000th Charles University student to take part in Erasmus. 🎓

During his stays abroad, he did not want to remain only within the “Erasmus bubble”. For him, getting to know local people, their culture and language was an important part of the experience. His advice to anyone considering Erasmus? Find an activity outside university as well. In Lisbon, Matěj took up bachata – and it helped him meet many local people.

☀️ We know summer is not even halfway through yet. But there is one important date you can already save in your calendar.

On 1 October 2026, we will meet at Kampus Hybernská to symbolically open the new academic year at Charles University.

🎸 The programme will be announced later, but you can already look forward to an informal gathering, a university atmosphere, student societies and music in Kampus.
