🌟 Historic First for Charles University's Faculty of Law! 🌟

For the first time ever, a researcher from the Faculty of Law at Charles University has been awarded the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant! Congratulations to Tomáš Dumbrovský, head of the Institute for Interregional Studies of Constitutionalism, for his groundbreaking project: "Community Through Constitution".

His research will explore how constitutions shape identity and legitimacy in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, a vital topic in today’s era of rising populism.

Tomáš’s journey to this achievement is nothing short of inspiring. From earning dual doctorates at Yale Law School and Charles University to postdoctoral studies at the European University Institute, and his long-term collaboration with the Doha Institute of Graduate Studies in Qatar, his global perspective has been instrumental in addressing complex constitutional challenges.

🗨️ As Tomáš explains:
“Our project responds to the rise of populism… By comparing constitutional dynamics across cultural worlds, we aim to foster discourse that builds collective identity through a blend of global human rights and local cultural norms, leading to a more pluralistic and tolerant society.”

This recognition also follows his 2021 ERC CZ grant and Charles University’s Primus Grant, testaments to his commitment and innovative research.

Let’s celebrate this milestone for Charles University and constitutional scholarship! 🎉👏

🔹 The recent political tendencies in Hungary, Poland and lately, Slovakia suggest that many citizens of the Visegrad countries have more important things to do than worrying about the rule of law in their countries. Is Czechia different, or is it simply lucky?

In Egypt and Algeria, we witness an exclusionary vision of community too; either through denial of minorities at all or recognizing only certain type of minorities such as religious minorities. The following quotation from an Egyptian respondent illustrates the denial of minorities.

Concerns rise as majoritarian sentiments challenge minority rights in Turkey, Egypt, and Algeria. Notably, in Turkey, there's a growing opposition to immigrants and refugees from Syria and Afghanistan, reflecting a reactionary perspective shaped by the country's social and political conditions.

🌐 Exploring dynamics in political discourse! 🗳️ Across five MENA countries (Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, and Turkey), the concept of "majority rules" emerges as the ultimate source of legitimate power, often without apparent limits. Anti-elitism prevails, emphasizing the people's authentic power over elites, portraying them as susceptible to corruption and potential abuse of power. 🤔 What role does this play in shaping political narratives? 📊
