After a two-year hiatus, The Geography Project was thrilled to reconnect with the world through Postcrossing these past few months. This year, we’ve sent postcards to China, Finland, and Malaysia and received wonderful ones from Iceland, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Our favorite part of postcrossing is seeing how postcards bring us all closer, one stamp at a time. Plus, it’s always exciting to discover what arrives in the mailbox! 📬

🗺️ MAP 🌎 Volendam is a small but fascinating village located in North Holland, Netherlands. 🇳🇱 With a population of approximately 22,000 people, this picturesque town is best known for its colorful wooden houses, vibrant fishing history, and thriving tourism industry. 🌷

Volendam is part of the municipality of Edam-Volendam, which covers an area of about 24 square kilometers (9 square miles). 📏 Despite its size, the village attracts visitors from around the world, thanks to its traditional Dutch culture and scenic harbor along the Markermeer Lake. ⛴️

Historically, Volendam was a key fishing port, but it transitioned into a cultural and tourist hub after the damming of the Zuiderzee in the early 20th century. 📸Today, it remains a hotspot for experiencing authentic Dutch traditions, such as traditional clothing and local seafood delicacies like smoked eel. 🐟

Did you know that Volendam is also home to one of the highest concentrations of preserved historical architecture in the Netherlands? It’s a must-visit for geography and history enthusiasts alike! 🌍

Volendam is also famous for its picturesque views and as a popular day-trip destination from Amsterdam. How incredible to have a little piece of this quaint village here with us!
