In honor of her birthday today, we’re happy to announce the naming of our newest study space! 🎂 The Anny Ondra Memorial Silent Room honors the life and legacy of Anny Ondra📽️ Born Anna Sophie Ondraková (15 May 1902, Tarnów, Austria-Hungary (now Poland) – 28 February 1987, Hollenstedt, West Germany), Ondra was a pioneering Czech actress who became one of the biggest stars of European silent and early sound cinema. She is especially remembered for her collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, including the 1929 film Blackmail, often considered Britain’s first sound feature film. We welcome all to our newly reconfigured room, an ideal spot to study or relax, home to our fiction, oversized, and reference collections. 📚

via : “Photographer Thomas Schlientz was a Navy photographer in the early 1950’s before managing John K. King Books in Detroit for 35 years. His album opens with a circa 1940’s folding color pictorial map of Kodiak Alaska followed by some wonderful aerial views of Kodiak Island and Navy installations in Alaska. There are some stunning larger images of volcanoes including one emitting a plume; perhaps these are along the Aleutian Chain. Several of these volcanic shots have catalog numbers in the negative and possibly are from 1944.”

The Czech historical thriller Vlny (Waves, 2024) depicts the struggle of a Czechoslovak Radio crew during the 1968 Soviet invasion. The movie has achieved major international success, earning a spot on the 97th Academy Awards shortlist for Best International Feature Film, winning the Satellite Award for Best Foreign-Language Film, and securing six awards out of 14 nominations at the 2024 Czech Lion Awards.
 
🎤 𝟭𝟴:𝟬𝟬 - 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗤&𝗔 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗝𝗶ří 𝗠á𝗱𝗹
Jiří Mádl is a prominent director, screenwriter and actor.  In 2009, he graduated from the University of J. A. Comenius where he studied Social and Mass Communication and subsequently graduated in screenwriting at the New York Film Academy. He is been one of the Czech Republic’s most recognizable young film stars since the mid-2000s, when he shot to fame as a teenage star in the 2004 comedy Snowboarďáci. Over the past two decades, he has transitioned from popular acting roles to becoming one of the most respected filmmakers in contemporary Czech cinema.
