🤔 Where does today’s environmental skepticism in Eastern Europe come from?

📊 In this forum, Elena Kochetkova, Doubravka Olšáková, and co-authors argue that contemporary climate skepticism is deeply rooted in state socialism, where economic growth was a primary source of political legitimacy and progress.

🔎 Examining Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, the GDR, and Yugoslavia, the authors reveal how socialist regimes systematically rejected ecological limits to growth. This ideological legacy continues to shape the region today, often framing modern environmental policies as externally imposed constraints.

🧠 A must-read for anyone interested in environmental history, the politics of degrowth, and climate policy in Central and Eastern Europe.

👏 Jonathan Collins is part of the ONLIVES project, funded under the EU's Horizon Europe programme. This international initiative examines the connection between online extremist content and offline extremist action across European society.

🎮 Focusing on the Czech case study, the team investigates how gaming environments are utilized by extremists to recruit young people and spread radical content.

💡 By interviewing high school students about their experiences in gaming spaces and reverse-engineering the content they encounter, the researchers aim to understand how extreme discourse impacts youth worldviews and social lives.

👏 Jon Collins is part of the Research in Societal Extremism (RISE) project (PRIMUS/26/SSH/011), which aims to showcase the shrinking gap between extremist movements and mainstream society, with both the offline and online worlds create vulnerabilities and opportunities for extreme discourse to manifest.

😶‍🌫️ At the same time, extremism itself is becoming increasingly blurred, with many groups piggybacking off one another and sharing similar ideological, aesthetic, and environmental traits.

💡 Examined through four lenses – identity, gaming, gender, and conspiracies – the international team seeks to understand the most pressing issues revolving around societal extremism.

🇵🇱 From 11 to 13 June, our PhD student Jakub Čapek visited the University of Rzeszów to participate in the 6th International Congress on Human Rights.

📊 Together with his Polish colleagues, he presented a research paper titled The Role of Local Government in Refugee Integration: A Single-Case Study of Mladá Boleslav.

🇺🇦 This paper is part of the project Beyond Borders, funded by the National Science Centre, OPUS LAP no. 2023/51/I/HS5/02456, and the Czech Science Foundation, which focuses on the role of municipalities in integrating Ukrainian refugees.

🤝 We were proud to be part of the event which brought together representatives of universities, international organisations, public institutions, and non-governmental organisations from 22 countries.
