6 airplane vocab words for your next trip! ✈️

Want to sound more natural when traveling? Stop saying "get on the plane" or "put my bag up top." Use the exact words native speakers and flight crews use!

Here’s your quick guide:

✈️ Board – To get on the aircraft ("Now boarding Gate 4").

🧳 Overhead Bin – The storage compartment above your seat.

💺 Trade / Swap – The 2 best verbs to negotiate switching seats.

💺 Recline – The mechanical verb for leaning your seat back.

🌩️ Turbulence – Shaking mid-flight due to air currents.

Even skilled professionals make these awkward slips without realizing it. Let’s clean them up right now:

❌ 1. "Tell the true..."

✅ "Tell the truth."

Quick tip: "True" is an adjective (e.g., a true story), but you need the noun "truth" here.

❌ 2. "Today morning..."

✅ "This morning."

Quick tip: We always say "this morning," "this afternoon," and "this evening." Save "today" for the whole day!

❌ 3. "Control" vs. "Check"

Quick tip: These do not mean the same thing! "To control" means to dominate, power over, or direct something. If you are just inspecting or verifying a document, you need to "check" it.

🎁 BONUS TIP:

Never add an "S" to homework. It is an uncountable noun!

❌ "I have many homeworks."

✅ "I have a lot of homework."

✈️ Heading to the airport soon? Make sure you know these 7 essential travel words before your next flight! 🌍

🚗 Pickup zone – The designated area outside the terminal where drivers can pull up to collect arriving passengers.

🚙 Drop-off zone – The area right by the departures entrance where you get let out with your luggage.

⏳ Layover – A brief stop between flights, usually lasting less than 24 hours, where you stay at the airport or on the plane.

🏨 Stopover – A much longer break between flights (usually more than 24 hours) that allows you to leave the airport and explore a new city for a day or two.

💰 Compensation – Money or vouchers given to you by an airline if your flight is significantly delayed, cancelled, or overbooked.

🎁 Complimentary – Anything provided free of charge by the airline or hotel (like a complimentary drink or meal!).

📋 Standby – Being on a waiting list for an earlier flight, or waiting to see if a seat opens up on a fully booked flight.
