🎓 Apply now to join the Masaryk University team for the 33rd Willem C. Vis Moot Court!
Are you ready to take your legal skills beyond the classroom? Applications are now open to become part of the next team representing the Masaryk University Faculty of Law in the 33rd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.
What is the Vis Moot?
⚖️ The Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is the world’s largest and most prestigious student competition in international commercial law and arbitration—often referred to as the law students‘ Olympics.
⚖️ The competition kicks off in October every year and participants work on a fictional dispute involving a contract for the international sale of goods under the CISG (UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods). Each case involves a Claimant and a Respondent, and your task is to research, draft arguments and advocate for both sides.
⚖️With the guidance of our experienced coaches, you will draft two legal memoranda in the autumn semester (one for each party) and participate in practice oral pleadings in the spring, hosted by law firms and online, working on your advocacy skills along the way.
Why should you apply?
✅ Join a team of motivated and curious students from our faculty
✅ Connect with leading arbitration professionals and fellow students worldwide
✅ Plead before practitioners in renowned law firms during training rounds
✅ Travel to international pre-moots – last year our team visited London, Belgrade, and Budapest (other premoots are held in Paris, Brussels, The Hague, Florence, Istanbul, and more)
✅ Compete in the final rounds held in Vienna or Hong Kong (Vis Moot East)
✅ Get 6 ECTS credits across two courses (one in the autumn semester, one in the spring semester) and tick off that mandatory requirement for a course in English
Who are we looking for?
✔️ Law students at the Masaryk University Faculty of Law
✔️ Fluent English speakers with strong reading and writing skills
✔️ Curious minds eager to learn beyond the standard curriculum
✔️ Team players ready to collaborate on a long-term, challenging project
✔️ Students willing to invest time and energy in developing legal and advocacy skills
How to Apply
Step 1: Don’t overthink it! You don’t need to be perfect—Vis Moot is first and foremost an educational experience. If you have questions, feel free to reach out.
Step 2: Send your CV (in English) and a short motivation letter (approx. 400 words) explaining why you’d like to join the Vis Moot to [email protected] by 25 May 2025.

The Vis Moot Finals in Vienna 🇦🇹
And just like that it’s over.
After months of preparation, weeks of pleadings, and thousands of messenger messages, too many late night calls to count… we made it. The 32nd Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna was the final stop on our moot journey — and what a week it was!
Our two Vienna oralists – Filip and Terka – represented our team in four general rounds against teams from University of Hamburg, Government Law College Mumbai, Amity University Lucknow and Galatasaray University. The arguments were sharp, arbitrators tough, rebuttals brutal and the adrenaline very real.
But Vis isn’t just about the rounds — it’s about:
- Running into teams you met three pre-moots ago,
- Figuring out who in your team is good at directions (and who definitely isn’t),
- Making friends in elevators,
- Realizing you messed up and need to take the elevator to a completely different floor,
- Meeting prof. Kröll in the next elevator and trying to not lose your cool (but definitely losing your cool),
- Listening to your teammate absolutely crush their rebuttal and being so proud,
- Answering the same ‘Which university are you guys from?’ for the twentieth time in a day,
- And so much more.
This time we didn’t walk away with mentions or trophies. But we’ve got memories, inside jokes, and the kind of friendship you only get from months of chaos together.
To everyone who coached us, arbitrated us, practiced with us, or cheered us on: Thank you! 💙

The Vis East Moot Finals in Hong Kong🇭🇰
For a half of our team, the 9 months long journey of many sleepless nights, decades of pleadings, 7 pre-moots and pushing to get the best out of this year’s Problem arguments has ended just 3 weeks ago in Hong Kong.
And what a run it was!🙌🏼
Robin and Jakub represented our team and gave their best in 4 general rounds on the other side of the world against the University of Durham, University of Ljubljana, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, and Nanjing University. Even though they left Hong Kong without mentions or trophies, when they got onto a plane headed back to Czechia, none of them felt other than fulfilled. Looking back at the past months, they qu**ky realised it wasn’t just about standing on the podium anyway. Because that is not what the Vis Moot is all about.
Vis Moot honed the legal writing, oral advocacy, and legal English to a whole new level of every person in our team. We met many inspiring people and managed to make numerous friends along the way. We gained knowledge of how to slam the other party with the arrest of one of our own protagonists, learned how to carefully say that even though we messed up the med-arb order, it still isn’t our mistake, or learned to push the tribunal into believing into some vague international law convention called CISG of which 97 countries are signatory states.
Neither of this would be possible without the people who made this experience. Mooties, arbitrators, coaches, organisers and all the people enthusiastic about the International Commercial Arbitration. That is, ultimately, what makes the Vis Moot unique for all the people that came through it.
And we thank everyone we could be part of it!💙
None of this could have been done without our great sponsors though. We thank Dentons, Havel&Partners, Squire Patton Boggs and Czech Arbitration Court for their continuous support of our team throughout the whole year. Thank you!

Budapest Pre-Moot 🇭🇺
Straight from Belgrade our next steps to Vienna have led us to Budapest, where Filip and Terka had quite the full schedule between 7th and 10th April during the 15th Budapest Pre-Moot.
As oralists we’ve had four practice pleadings against the teams from:
- A. Scalia Law School
- Griffith University
- National Law University Delhi
- University of New South Wales
The Budapest Pre-Moot also allows students to act as arbitrators – and our team dove right in. Filip and Terka both had four rounds as arbitrators, offering a whole new perspective on the competition.
Experiencing the other side gave us first-hand insight into what works (and what doesn’t) in a pleading and how challenging it is to stay engaged, fair, and helpful over long rounds, and left a deep appreciation for all the arbitrators and coaches who dedicate their time to Vis students💙
We extend our gratitude to our partners Dentons, Havel & Partners, Squire Patton Boggs and the Czech Arbitration Court for their invaluable support, without which this journey wouldn’t be possible.
As the Budapest Pre-Moot wrapped up, so did the entire pre-moot season — and since Claimant and Respondent haven’t reached an amicable settlement…
Next stop: The Vis Moot Finals!🌟

Belgrade Pre-Moot 🇷🇸
Between 4th and 6th April our two Vienna oralists have participated in one of the last pre-moots of the 32nd Vis Moot season – the XVII Belgrade Open Pre-Moot.
Here’s what went down during the 48 hours we’ve spent in Belgrade:
🎤 We tested our arguments and worked on our oral advocacy skills in a total of four practice pleadings against the amazing teams from University of New South Wales, University of Trieste, Ankara University and the University of Buenos Aires.
🪩 We enjoyed two social events organised as a part of the pre-moot, caught up with old friends and met some new ones as well.
🔥In the few free moments we devoured some ćevapi, kajmak and somun and wondered how we’ll ever be able to move and eat anything else.
Huge thanks to the organisers of the Belgrade pre-moot for such a well-planned pre-moot!
We also extend our gratitude to our partners Dentons, Havel & Partners, Squire Patton Boggs and the Czech Arbitration Court for their invaluable support, without which this journey wouldn’t be possible.

The first pre-moot is behind us! 💫
The very first round of the pre-moot season happened no other than on our home grounds - Masaryk University in Brno! Even though the first in-person pleadings were tough, they were even more rewarding. And we cannot wait for more! 💪🏼
We give our special thanks to our partner Squite Patton Boggs who organised and prepared the whole pre-moot!

MEET OUR MOOTIES! 💪🏼
Jakub is in his second year of law studies at Masaryk University.
As part of the merits team, you would be hard-pressed to find a greater expert in Brno on exclusion of CISG, interpretation under CISG, or pizza oven construction.
Kuba usually doesn't have much free time on his hands. But if he does, you'll find him most often in his own kitchen, where he'll most likely be cooking his famous broth or beef burgundy. He's also always up for a cup of specialty coffee, which he likes to enjoy over a good book.
