No German child has ever walked into school on the first day without carrying a giant paper cone 🇩🇪

Die Schultüte. Nearly as tall as the child, decorated at home or bought and then argued over, filled with sweets — and, near the bottom where hope goes to die, a pencil case and a ruler.

It is around two hundred years old and it started in Saxony and Thuringia, where children were told a Zuckertüte tree grew at the schoolmaster's house, and when the cones on it were ripe it was time to start school.

And it exists for one reason: the first day of school is frightening, so the culture built a bribe into it and never stopped.

Every German family has the photograph. Child on the doorstep, enormous cone, stiff new Ranzen, uncertain face.
