WP3.1 Workshop
Wildfires are worsening in the Mediterranean due to longer fire seasons, and mega-fires.
A key challenge is ensuring that wildfire management uses science-based innovations.

WP3.1 Workshop

As part of the SIMMER Project’s stakeholder engagement activities, PPU (Palestine Polytechnic University), Palestinian partner of SIMMER, held a coordination meeting with the Palestinian Civil Defense on the 17th March 2026 to assess the current wildfire response framework in Palestine. The discussion focused on operational procedures during wildfire incidents, the availability of firefighting equipment, and the key challenges faced by response teams, particularly during periods of high temperatures and prolonged dry conditions. Participants also explored how the SIMMER Project can support improved preparedness, enhance coordination among relevant institutions, and facilitate knowledge exchange on wildfire risk management, contributing to more effective and timely response efforts.

Joseph Bechara, wildfire management expert at Lebanon Reforestation Initiative (Lebanon Reforestation Initiative) and SIMMER Project Manager, had an interview on Voix du Liban, on 24th March 2026, highlighting that wildfire management goes beyond firefighting. It includes prevention, ecosystem restoration, pollution control, and strong coordination among stakeholders such as Civil Defense, ministries, municipalities, and local communities.
Mr. Bechara, introduced the EU-funded project called SIMMER, which brings together six Mediterranean countries to enhance cooperation, share knowledge, and develop joint solutions for wildfire preparedness. He emphasized LRI’s role in raising awareness and promoting prevention, alongside the importance of strengthening Civil Defense capacities.
Joseph Bechara concluded by inviting stakeholders and experts to contribute insights and resources to support collective efforts in wildfire risk reduction.

We’re really excited to share something a bit different we’re bringing into SIMMER 😊 A video showcasing how vineyards can act as natural firebreaks — slowing down or even stopping wildfires.
This example comes from the HORIZON ResAlliance project, where we’re collecting real-life practices that are already making a difference on the ground. As part of the ongoing WP3 work, all partners are mapping their stakeholders and bringing in knowledge, ideas, and lessons from other projects — building on what already exists instead of starting from scratch.
What we love about this is how it connects real-world experience with simulation. By feeding insights like this into SIMMER, we can explore how nature-based solutions might work in different scenarios — always keeping people, landscapes, and shared knowledge at the center 🌱🔥
