On Cyprus, carved ships were found on monumental buildings, as early as the Late Bronze Age in Kition and Enkomi, but the vast majority of ship graffiti on the island have been documented in medieval and later contexts. MARELab, in collaboration with the Cyprus Institute and the Department of Antiquities, initiated a research project in 2014, funded by the Leventis Foundation and entitled ‘KARAVOI’: The Ship Graffiti on the Medieval Monuments of Cyprus: Mapping, Documentation and Digitisation’.

This past Thursday (4th of December 2025), Dr Stella Demesticha gave a talk as part of the 14th Annual Honor Frost Lecture, at The British Academy in London. The lecture was titled “The Nissia Shipwreck Cyprus: an entangled biography” and it delivered exactly what it promised - a detailed and intellectually stimulating overview of the complexities in understanding and interpreting the Nissia Shipwreck.

There are, however, some key takeaways included in the lecture that should be emphasised: Firstly, the Honor Frost Foundation changed the maritime archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean by providing substantial support so we can continue researching and promoting the maritime cultural heritage of the island. These few lines are not enough for the gratitude we feel towards the foundation.

The team working with us (and by extension Archaeological Research Unit, UCY - Ερευνητική Μονάδα Αρχαιολογίας, ΠΚ ; Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus), mostly comprised of volunteers, has been carrying their mission with humbleness, respect, and utter professionalism. Maritime Archaeology at the University of Cyprus has been on an upward trajectory for almost two decades, despite the difficulties that unavoidably follow the very nature of the discipline.

Lastly, everything we do becomes truly meaningful only when the local population becomes aware of it, and accepts it as part of their identity and cultural heritage. Here goes a reminder for all archaeologists out there: the job is not over with a scientific publication.
