Ireland: a snapshot of digital skills 13/01/2026

Ireland is making great progress in digital skills, but there’s still more to do!

According to the latest Digital Skills and Jobs Platform country snapshot, 72.9% of people in Ireland now have basic digital skills, placing the country well above the EU average of 55.6% and on track to meet the EU 2030 digital goals. Ireland also boasts a strong share of ICT specialists in employment, outperforming many EU partners: https://digital-skills-jobs.europa.eu/en/latest/briefs/ireland-snapshot-digital-skills

This is encouraging news, but as we move further into a digital society, digital literacy must grow stronger at all ages. Whether it’s school students navigating information online, teachers integrating tech into learning or seniors building confidence with everyday digital tools, there’s a clear opportunity for community-wide skill building.

🌟 That’s exactly what Digital Harmony aims to support:
✅ Bringing generations together to learn and share digital skills
✅ Strengthening critical thinking and online safety awareness
✅ Promoting digital well-being for all ages

Ireland continues to strengthen digital learning in schools through the Digital Learning Framework and Planning Resources for Primary Schools, developed by OIDE: the Office of the Inspectorate and Department of Education:https://www.oidetechnologyineducation.ie/app/uploads/2021/07/Digital-Learning-Planning-Guidelines-compressed_1.pdf

👉 So, what is OIDE?
OIDE (Office of the Inspectorate and Department of Education) is the national support service for teachers and school leaders in Ireland. It brings together professional learning, curriculum support and school improvement initiatives; helping schools respond to changing educational needs, including digital learning and well-being.

The Digital Learning Framework helps schools:
✔️ Reflect on how technology is used for teaching and learning
✔️ Plan improvements in digital practice
✔️ Support teachers and pupils in developing meaningful digital skills

🔗 This is closely linked with the goals of Digital Harmony, which promotes digital well-being, responsible technology use and intergenerational learning within school communities.

➡ Through supporting teachers, students and senior adults together, Digital Harmony complements national initiatives like OIDE’s work and helps digital learning remain inclusive, balanced and people-centred.

Untangling Digital Safety, literacy, and Wellbeing in School activities for 10 to 13 Year Old Students - Education and Information Technologies 20/12/2025

In an era where digital technologies pe*****te every aspect of education and a growing body of research examining various aspects of digital safety, there exists a significant research gap concerning the overarching (holistic) influence of digital activities on the schooling of 10 to 13 year olds. This paper presents a comprehensive review that untangles the complex relationship between digital safety, literacy, and wellbeing in this context based on 24 papers appearing in international peer-reviewed journals published from 2010 to 2023, and critically examines the impact of digital safety protocols on online student activities, the role of digital literacy in enhancing learning outcomes, and the intricate interplay between digital wellbeing and academic engagement, taking into account the changes created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings showed that the online engagement of students between Year 6 and Year 8 is deeply impacted by factors like digital literacy, digital communication/relationships, digital well-being, and digital habits; that COVID-19 put a spotlight on health; but that in general more research into digital safety needs to be conducted from a holistic and longitudinal viewpoint. Through careful analysis of the literature, this study provides insight into the challenges faced by 10 to 13 year olds, providing valuable directions for educators, policymakers, and researchers striving to create a safe, supportive, and empowering learning environment.

Irish pupils relying on social media and AI for sexual health advice, study warns 18/12/2025

📲 Irish pupils are turning to social media and AI for information on important topics like sexual health; and that’s raising real concerns here in Ireland.

A study reported in the Irish Examiner earlier this year found that many students are relying on platforms like TikTok and AI tools for guidance, even when the information may be misleading or inaccurate: https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41690952.html

This highlights just how important digital literacy and critical thinking skills have become for young people growing up in a technology-filled world.

🎓 That’s where Digital Harmony steps in:
✔️ We support schools in building digital well-being and online safety knowledge.
✔️ We bring teachers, students and senior adults together to share perspectives and learn from one another.
✔️ We help communities to develop skills that go beyond devices, so young people can make smarter, safer, more informed digital choices.

Digital literacy and why it matters 15/12/2025

Why digital literacy matters — worth a watch! 👇

This video highlights something we talk about a lot in Digital Harmony: digital literacy isn’t just knowing how to use technology, it’s about understanding, navigating and communicating safely and responsibly in digital spaces.

In Ireland and across Europe, young people are spending more time online than ever before. But digital skills don’t always match up with digital access and that’s where we see real challenges in school communities.

🧑‍🏫 That’s why Digital Harmony brings students, teachers and senior adults together to grow digital confidence. Through workshops, shared activities and intergenerational projects, we aim to help everyone think critically about what they find online and why it matters.
