Imperial Outposts, Insurgent Paths: Cyprus, Palestine and the Eastern Mediterranean

Facilitated by Joud Al-Tamimi in collaboration with Asphalt. Curated by Reem Rizk as part of 'The Near and the Elsewhere' program.

Sunday October 12
Session I: 12-13:30
Lunch: 13:30-14:00
Session II: 14:00-15:30
Join us at 16:00 for the protest at Eleftheria Square.

This two-part study program explores the political, historical, and revolutionary entanglements between Cyprus and the broader region, with a focus on the Palestinian struggle. It examines Cyprus’s role as both an imperial outpost and a revolutionary crossroads in the Eastern Mediterranean. From counterinsurgency operations against Cypriot and Palestinian fighters, to the island’s place within the logistical networks of the Palestinian resistance, to its current entanglement in a regional architecture of settler-colonial violence, Cyprus has long functioned as both a node of imperial control and a site of insurgent possibility. It stands at a fault line between domination and revolt.

Over two sessions, we move from the archive to the present geopolitical landscape, tracing histories of insurgency, maritime defiance, and anti-colonial solidarity that remain urgent in the context of ongoing regional struggles. Through archival materials, essays, firsthand testimony, and field recordings, participants will interrogate the island’s role in regional resistance movements and consider how its history might inform solidarities in the present.

Joud Al-Tamimi is a cultural worker and researcher whose work engages anticolonial imaginaries, insurgent economics, and psychoanalysis. From 2019 to 2021, she worked at Darat al Funun, where she directed The Lab program and curated the trilogy: Internet of Things: Another World is Possible, Measuring Life: Notes Toward an Impossible Exchange, and Postcolonial Ecologies. Most recently, she founded Asphalt, a platform for self-organised study and publishing.

Join us today at 19:30 for a talk by Monica Basbous.

“Neither combatant nor civilian: Collapsing Categories of our Century”

Despite growing criticism of the frameworks of International Law which codified the principle of distinction between combatants and non-combatants, the civilian-military duality continues to be a cornerstone of public discourse and a benchmark against which the legitimacy of military operations, humanitarian interventions, and media narratives about war are measured. While it is typically addressed from legal and humanitarian perspectives, this talk will discuss its spatial dimensions and the historical entanglements of civilian and military realms.

Monica Basbous is a multi-disciplinary researcher and educator trained in architecture and communication studies. Working through maps, images, games, text and hypertext, Monica’s practice is concerned with how power is negotiated through the production of space, time, knowledge, bodies, and their representations. They are currently a doctoral researcher at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where they are examining the growing incorporation of media technologies and warfare. Monica is a founding member of Qorras, where they co-develop methodologies for critical research and creative documentation. Recent writings were published in the Architectural Review, Middle-East Critique, Jeem, and Weird Economies.

ENG:

Thkio Ppalies is pleased to announce 'The Near and the Elsewhere', a multidisciplinary public program curated by Reem Rizk, running from September to October 2025. Featuring an installation, music performance, film screenings, talks, workshops, and a publication, the program critically interrogates the ways in which individual and systemic borders construct and control dominant notions of “Otherness.”

To speak of the Other is to speak of the edge of the self—a liminal space where identity is forged not in isolation, but through close encounters. While the Other remains fundamental to self-recognition, this dynamic has long been exploited by hegemonic structures, resulting in systems of oppression, exclusion, and erasure.

In response to evolving global crises marked by wars, mass displacement, and pervasive surveillance, 'The Near and the Elsewhere' invites us to unlearn the architectures of othering that continue to fracture our shared realities. The program aims to foster embodied dialogues rooted in alternative modes of collective belonging and emergent identities.

A complete list of participants and the program schedule will be released closer to the date. Stay tuned!

GR:

Οι Θκιό Ππαλιές παρουσιάζουν το διεπιστημονικό πρόγραμμα «The Near and the Elsewhere», υπό την επιμέλεια της Reem Rizk, το οποίο εγκαινιάζεται τον Σεπτέμβριο και θα ολοκληρωθεί τον Οκτώβριο του 2025.
