On 22 May, a group of Year 1 students proudly participated in the “King’s Baton Relay 2026”, organised by the Cyprus Olympic Committee, in celebration of the upcoming Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026.
The event aimed to promote the competitive sports training programme connected to the Commonwealth Games and to provide the public with opportunities for training and education in the sports included in the Games programme. It also sought to raise awareness of the values and ideals of the Commonwealth through sport, participation, and community engagement.
Our students had the opportunity to experience and explore a variety of sports, including judo, cycling, running, table tennis, and weightlifting, while also learning more about the rules of volleyball. We are incredibly proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students at the 43rd Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO), held in Thessaloniki.
A special congratulations goes to Philippos Rouvas, a student of our school’s Enrichment Program, who earned a Silver Medal at this prestigious international competition. His result is exceptional within the history of Cyprus’ participation in the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad: only four students from Cyprus have ever achieved Silver Medals at the competition, with those four students collectively earning six Silver Medals in total. This highlights the remarkable level of Philippos’ achievement and the dedication, perseverance, and talent behind his success.
We would also like to congratulate Su Zilin, one of the youngest members of the Cyprus national team, who is currently in Year 4. Competing at such a high level at such a young age is an extraordinary accomplishment, and we are excited to see what the future holds for him.
These remarkable accomplishments are a testament to the strength and consistency of our school’s Enrichment Program. For the 4th consecutive year, students from our Year 4 Enrichment classes have been selected to represent Cyprus on the national team. The English School extends its congratulations to Philippos Rouvas and Su Zilin, as well as to the teachers, coaches, and families who supported their preparation.

This year, The English School marked the 70th anniversary of the sacrifice of Michalis Karaolis, honouring his memory through a moving commemorative ceremony attended by members of our school community, the Karaolis family, alumni, and former classmates from ESL 1953.
The ceremony included a memorial service (Trisagion), speeches by the Headmaster and Alexios Savvas Karaolis (Year 6), the great-nephew of Michalis Karaolis, the laying of wreaths, and musical performances by students.
🌳 To commemorate this important anniversary, a tree and memorial plaque were unveiled and planted by Head Boy Nicolas Maroudias and Alexios Savvas Karaolis — a lasting symbol of remembrance and legacy.
We were honoured to welcome former classmates of Michalis Karaolis, including Aris Symeonides, Andreas Zachariou, Andreas Hadjipapas, as well as Pantelis Anayiotos (ESL 1958).
A meaningful occasion of reflection, remembrance, and respect for a historic member of The English School community.
