ANNUAL COURTS AND JUSTICE CONFERENCE 2026 - Procedural Law Unit, University of Nicosia

The Algorithmic Courtroom: Trust, Accountability, and the Future of Justice

The Procedural Law Unit of the University of Nicosia (https://www.unic.ac.cy/school-of-law/plu/) invites submissions for its Annual Courts and Justice Conference 2026, to be held on Friday, 4 December 2026, at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus.

This year’s conference will examine perceptions of the use of artificial intelligence in adjudication, focusing on the legal, institutional, ethical, and technological conditions under which AI may be used, or considered for use, in judicial decision-making and court processes.

As courts and justice systems increasingly engage with emerging technologies, important questions arise concerning transparency, accountability, procedural fairness, judicial independence, human oversight, and public trust. The conference aims to foster interdisciplinary discussion on the opportunities, risks, limitations, and safeguards associated with the use of AI in adjudication.

We welcome contributions from scholars, practitioners, judges, policymakers, technologists, and early-career researchers.

Submission Guidelines

• Abstract length: Up to 500 words, including footnotes
• Submission deadline: 15 September 2026
• Conference date: 4 December 2026
• Venue: University of Nicosia, Cyprus

Authors will be notified of the outcome of the review process in due course. The contributions will be published. Further details regarding registration and the conference programme will be announced at a later date.

On the 26th of May 2026 our External Associate, Cleopatra Khattab, participated in the conference "Public and Private Justice: Dispute Resolution in Modern Societies", held as part of “YEAR XX: Digital Transformation of Civil Justice – Improving or Dehumanizing Dispute Resolution?” at the Inter University Centre (IUC) Dubrovnik.

Cleopatra delivered a presentation titled “From Fallible Minds to Formal Institutions: Why Democracies Must Rethink Human Decision-Making”. The presentation examined public perceptions of trust in both human and AI-assisted judicial decision-making, drawing on comparative survey research across multiple jurisdictions.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity for interdisciplinary academic exchange on contemporary legal, social and governance challenges.
