Fireside Chat - Global Citizenship Education 29/05/2026

📚 What does it truly mean to educate for democracy, justice, and inclusion?

The fireside discussion on Global Citizenship Education challenged participants to rethink education not as a stand-alone subject, but as a lifelong process rooted in critical thinking, empathy, participation, and collective responsibility.

Drawing on experiences from across Europe and the Western Balkans, the session explored how education can empower individuals to challenge inequalities, navigate disinformation, strengthen community connections, and actively contribute to more inclusive and democratic societies.

From media literacy and social justice to storytelling and community-building, the discussion highlighted the transformative role of Global Citizenship Education in fostering agency, solidarity, and democratic resilience.

Moderated by Dr. Marios Antoniou (Unit of Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Cyprus), the fireside discussion featured Francesca Vanoni (Global Citizenship Education Practitioner, Italy).

A powerful message emerged throughout the session: meaningful change begins when people believe they have the power to shape the world around them.

Panel II – The Role of Civil Society in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 28/05/2026

🌍 How can civil society turn global commitments into tangible local impact?

At the Euro-Mediterranean CSO Conference panel discussion “The Role of Civil Society in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”, experts from across Europe and the Mediterranean explored how CSOs, researchers, policymakers, and environmental actors can work together to accelerate progress toward the SDGs.

The discussion highlighted civil society as a critical bridge between global frameworks and local realities — translating policy into action, identifying implementation gaps, and strengthening accountability. Participants also emphasised the importance of coalition-building, evidence-based advocacy, and inclusive policymaking as key enablers of sustainable development.

Moderated by Chara Triteou (Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth Υπουργείο Παιδείας, Αθλητισμού και Νεολαίας, Cyprus), the panel featured:
▪ Marta Garcia-Haro (UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network)
▪ Susana Fonseca (ZERO – Association for the Sustainability of the Earth System, Portugal)
▪ Natasa Ioannou (Friends of the Earth Cyprus - Φίλοι της Γης Κύπρου)
▪ Dr. Theodoros Zachariadis (The Cyprus Institute)
▪ Anna Dorangricchia (Union for the Mediterranean, Spain)

A key message emerged clearly: achieving the SDGs requires more than consultation. It requires structured collaboration, institutionalised participation, and co-decision with civil society.
