⚡ The University of Cyprus Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), is launching the new Academia Meets Industry initiative with its first thematic Roundtable Discussion dedicated to Energy.

This strategic initiative aims to establish a structured platform for dialogue and collaboration between academia, research, and industry, fostering knowledge transfer, applied research, and innovation-driven partnerships.
By aligning research expertise with real-world challenges and industry needs, it seeks to accelerate Cyprus’s energy transition and translate engineering research into practical impact through innovation, technology transfer, and long-term collaboration.

Key discussion areas include:

🔹 Energy-efficient buildings and sustainable construction
🔹 Industry challenges requiring research-driven solutions

The Roundtable brings together leading companies, industry stakeholders, academics, and researchers, marking the first step in a broader strategic collaboration between academia and industry aimed at strengthening Cyprus’s innovation and energy ecosystem.

Το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου δέχεται αιτήσεις για την πλήρωση μιας θέσης Ειδικού Εκπαιδευτικού Προσωπικού (ΕΕΠ) (με δυνατότητα μονιμοποίησης κατόπιν αξιολόγησης) στο Τμήμα Πολιτικών Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Περιβάλλοντος.

Η θέση προκηρύσσεται με αφορμή την έναρξη του νέου πιστοποιημένου Προπτυχιακού Προγράμματος Σπουδών στη Μηχανική Περιβάλλοντος από τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2026 - με την θεσμική πλέον αναγνώριση της Μηχανικής Περιβάλλοντος από το Επιστημονικό Τεχνικό Επιμελητήριο Κύπρου ΕΤΕΚ
Κύριο έργο του μέλους ΕΕΠ που θα διοριστεί στην παραπάνω θέση θα είναι η υποστήριξη των νέων αναγκών του Τμήματος ΠΜΜΠ που δημιουργούνται με τη λειτουργία του νέου προπτυχιακού προγράμματος στη Μηχανική Περιβάλλοντος καθώς επίσης και η υποστήριξη διδασκαλίας βασικών εργαστηριακών μαθημάτων του Τμήματος ΠΜΜΠ, τόσο στην κατεύθυνση των Πολιτικών Μηχανικών όσο και των Μηχανικών Περιβάλλοντος υπό την εποπτεία των μελών του ακαδημαϊκού προσωπικού του Τμήματος ΠΜΜΠ.

Η εγκεκριμένη μισθοδοτική κλίμακα για το Ειδικό Εκπαιδευτικό Προσωπικό είναι η συνδυασμένη μισθοδοτική κλίμακα Α8, Α10 και Α11.

Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι/ες καλούνται να υποβάλουν την αίτησή τους ηλεκτρονικά μέχρι 26η Ιουνίου 2026.

This Seminar is part of the Seminar Series "The Engineer in Society". The Seminar is open to students, researchers and professionals interested in material innovation.

This lecture highlights the emergence of bio-geotechnical engineering, specifically by focusing on Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP), this is achieved by addressing the pressing need for sustainable and efficient engineering solutions as an alternative to traditional chemical synthesis. MICP presents itself as a promising and sustainable approach to soil stabilization, mitigating environmental concerns linked with cement-based products. Through harnessing microorganisms present in soil and groundwater, MICP not only enhances soil mechanical properties but also contributes to geohazard mitigation. This comprehensive lecture spans MICP studies, ranging from microscopic characterizations to lab-scale testing and large-scale applications, showcasing its adaptability and versatility. It delves into the bio-chemo-mechanical principles of MICP, emphasizing the increasing interest and expanding research within the field. The discussion extends to advancements in modeling tools, crucial for evaluating and optimizing MICP processes. These innovations play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical applications, guiding the design of MICP for real-world scenarios. Furthermore, the lecture stresses the necessity of shifting focus towards MICP application at natural sites, highlighting its potential to become a standard in sustainable geotechnical engineering.

Speaker's short bio:
Lyesse Laloui is a Professor of Civil and Environmental engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Lausanne (EPFL) where he directs the Laboratory for Soil Mechanics. He is a world-renowned expert in geomechanics and geo-energy. Inspired by the intricate systems of the natural world, his groundbreaking research into the physical mechanisms of geomaterials has unlocked innovative technologies crucial for addressing climate change, resource optimization, and the widespread adoption of renewable energy. His impact is underscored by prestigious awards, including an Advanced ERC Grant, an ERC Proof of Concept Grant, and an EiC Transition Grant. Prof. Laloui's international recognition is further solidified by two honoris causae (Heriot-Watt University, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca) in recognition of his sustainability leadership. Prof. Laloui holds influential positions within the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences and Academia Europaea, and serves as European Vice President for the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. As founder and Honorary Editor-in-Chief of Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment, Prof. Laloui shapes the field's discourse. His vast publication record includes internationally celebrated works. He is a sought-after keynote speaker (>50 conferences) and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Interpore Kimberly-Clark Distinguished Lectureship Award (2026), ASCE Kersten Lecture (2020), Vienna Terzaghi Lecture (2022), the DFI John Mitchell Lecture (2025) and more. Prof. Laloui's commitment to innovation extends beyond academia, holding several patents and founding five EPFL startup. This underscores his ability to translate cutting-edge science into impactful technologies, often drawing inspiration from nature's own solutions.
