Στην πρόσφατη έκθεσή της για την Κύπρο, στην οποία αναλύει τις οικονομικές και κοινωνικές εξελίξεις και προκλήσεις της χώρας, η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή παραπέμπει στη πρόσφατη μελέτη του Ινστιτούτου για την κλιματική προσαρμογή, που επισημαίνει το σημαντικό χάσμα μεταξύ του ύψους των επενδύσεων που απαιτούνται για την προσαρμογή στην κλιματική αλλαγή και του ποσού που έχει προγραμματιστεί. Γίνεται αναφορά στο συμπέρασμά μας ότι η Κύπρος χρειάζεται επιπλέον επενδύσεις προσαρμογής ύψους 0,4% του ΑΕΠ ετησίως έως το 2050, όμως λιγότερο από το 30% αυτών των επενδύσεων έχει προγραμματιστεί επί του παρόντος.

In its recent Country Report for Cyprus, where it identifies the country's economic and social developments and challenges, the European Commission cites explicitly our climate adaptation study identifying the significant gap between the amount of investment that is needed for climate change adaptation and the amount that is currently planned. It makes reference to our finding that Cyprus needs additional adaptation investment of 0.4% of GDP per year until 2050 and repeats our conclusion that the Cypriot economy can sustain such expenditures, but underlines that less than 30% of these investments are currently planned.

📢The frequency and intensity of extreme heat events are increasing in Cyprus, as in the rest of the world, heightening the health risks and productivity loss for workers both outdoors and indoors. In a joint effort between CARE-C and EEWRC researchers of the Cyprus Institute to assess the heat's impact on labour productivity, we used climate and biological data to calculate physical heat stress indicators for different levels of work intensity and sun exposure. Then, combining the projected physical impacts with economic data, we assessed that lost economic output due to hotter working conditions may amount to 101 million Euros in 2030, or 0,4% of GDP, and 303 million Euros in 2050, or 0,7% of GDP. Cumulative economic losses up to 2050 could reach 0,5% of the entire GDP of Cyprus of that period, if no further adaptation measures are taken in workplaces.

Our study is the first one using Cypriot data to estimate the economic damage caused by lost work hours due to extreme heat. Most European countries may face greater losses in labour productivity due to climate change because their indoor workplaces are not adequately adapted, but the impacts on the most vulnerable and exposed workers in Cyprus may also be severe and require adaptation measures to monitor and protect workers’ health.

📢Η συχνότητα και η ένταση των φαινομένων ακραίας ζέστης αυξάνονται στην Κύπρο, όπως και στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο, εντείνοντας τους κινδύνους για τους εργαζόμενους τόσο σε εξωτερικούς όσο σε εσωτερικούς χώρους. Ερευνητές του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου από τα ερευνητικά κέντρα CARE-C και EEWRC συνδυάσαμε κλιματικά και βιολογικά δεδομένα για να υπολογίσουμε φυσικούς δείκτες θερμικής καταπόνησης για διαφορετικά επίπεδα έντασης εργασίας και διαφορετικά επίπεδα έκθεσης στον ήλιο. Στη συνέχεια, συνδυάζοντας τις φυσικές επιπτώσεις με οικονομικά δεδομένα, εκτιμήσαμε την επίδραση στην οικονομική δραστηριότητα από την αυξανόμενη ζέστη που προβλέπεται τα επόμενα χρόνια. Η απώλεια προστιθέμενης αξίας εξαιτίας μειωμένης οικονομικής παραγωγής λόγω θερμότερων εργασιακών συνθηκών μπορεί να ανέλθει σε 101 εκατομμύρια Ευρώ το 2030 ή 0,4% του ΑΕΠ, και 303 εκατομμύρια Ευρώ το 2050 ή 0,7% του ΑΕΠ. Οι σωρευτικές οικονομικές απώλειες έως το 2050 μπορούν να φθάσουν στο 0,5% του ΑΕΠ όλης της περιόδου 2026-2050, εάν δεν ληφθούν μέτρα προσαρμογής στους εργασιακούς χώρους.

Η μελέτη μας εκτιμά για πρώτη φορά με κυπριακά δεδομένα την οικονομική ζημιά λόγω απώλειας ωρών εργασίας εξαιτίας της έντονης ζέστης. Μολονότι οι περισσότερες ευρωπαϊκές χώρες μπορεί να αντιμετωπίσουν μεγαλύτερες απώλειες στην παραγωγικότητα της εργασίας λόγω κλιματικής αλλαγής, επειδή οι εσωτερικοί χώροι εργασίας τους δεν είναι προσαρμοσμένοι κατάλληλα, οι επιπτώσεις στους πιο ευάλωτους και εκτεθειμένους εργαζόμενους στην Κύπρο μπορεί επίσης να είναι σοβαρές και απαιτούν τη λήψη μέτρων προσαρμογής για την παρακολούθηση και την προστασία της υγείας των εργαζομένων.

Το Πανεπιστήμιο Μπαλαμάντ και το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου υπέγραψαν μια στρατηγική συνεργασία με στόχο την ενίσχυση της κλιματικής έρευνας, της ανώτερης εκπαίδευσης και της επιστημονικής διπλωματίας στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο.

Η Διακήρυξη της Περιφερειακής Επιστημονικής Συμμαχίας για την Κλιματική Αλλαγή υπεγράφη από τον Καθηγητή Elias Warrak, Πρόεδρο του Πανεπιστημίου Μπαλαμάντ, και τον Καθηγητή Σταύρο Μαλά, Πρόεδρο του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, στο πλαίσιο της Εβδομάδας Αποφοίτησης του Πανεπιστημίου Μπαλαμάντ τον Ιούλιο του 2026. Η συμμετοχή του Πανεπιστημίου Μπαλαμάντ στη Συμμαχία, η οποία συντονίζεται μέσω του Κέντρου Κλιματικής Διπλωματίας και Βιώσιμης Ειρήνης (Climate Diplomacy and Sustainable Peace Hub), θα προωθήσει τη συνεργασία στους τομείς της κλιματικής επιστήμης, της τεχνητής νοημοσύνης, των επιστημών του συστήματος της γης, της βιωσιμότητας των υδάτινων πόρων και της ενέργειας, της μεταπτυχιακής εκπαίδευσης και των κοινών ευρωπαϊκών προγραμμάτων.

Η αντιπροσωπεία του Πρόεδρο του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μπαλαμάντ, στην οποία συμμετείχε επίσης ο Επίτιμος Πρόεδρος του Ινστιτούτου, Καθηγητής Κώστας Παπανικόλας, συμμετείχε σε ακαδημαϊκές και διπλωματικές συναντήσεις και επισκέψεις σε περιβαλλοντικούς χώρους. Η επίσκεψη συνέπεσε με την Τελετή Αποφοίτησης του Πανεπιστημίου Μπαλαμάντ, κατά την οποία περισσότεροι από 1.400 φοιτητές ολοκλήρωσαν τις σπουδές τους, ενώ η Α.Ε. Sigrid Kaag, Συμπρόεδρος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Ιδρύματος των Ηνωμένων Εθνών και μέλος του Διεθνούς Συμβουλευτικού Συμβουλίου για τις Ειρηνευτικές Προσπάθειες στη Γάζα, έλαβε τιμητικό διδακτορικό τίτλο για τη συμβολή της στη διπλωματία, την οικοδόμηση της ειρήνης και τη βιώσιμη ανάπτυξη.

Η συνεργασία μεταξύ των δύο ιδρυμάτων δημιουργεί μια μακροπρόθεσμη πλατφόρμα μέσω της οποίας τα πανεπιστήμια μπορούν να προάγουν την επιστημονική αριστεία, να στηρίξουν τη χάραξη πολιτικών που βασίζονται σε τεκμηριωμένα στοιχεία και να συμβάλλουν στη δημιουργία μιας πιο ανθεκτικής, βιώσιμης και ειρηνικής Ανατολικής Μεσογείου.

The University of Balamand (UOB) and The Cyprus Institute (CyI) have launched a strategic partnership to strengthen climate research, higher education and science diplomacy across the Eastern Mediterranean.

The agreement establishing the Regional Scientific Alliance for Climate Change was signed by Professor Elias Warrak, President of UOB and Professor Stavros Malas, President of CyI, during the University of Balamand’s Commencement Week in July 2026. UOB’s participation in the Alliance, coordinated by the Climate Diplomacy and Sustainable Peace Hub, will promote cooperation in climate science, artificial intelligence, Earth system sciences, water and energy sustainability, graduate education and joint European programmes.

The CyI delegation to the UOB, which also included Founding President Professor Costas Papanicolas, participated in high-level academic and diplomatic meetings and environmental site visits. The visit coincided with UOB’s Commencement Ceremony, during which more than 1,400 students graduated and H.E. Sigrid Kaag, Co-Chair of the United Nations Foundation Board of Directors and Member of the International Advisory Council for Gaza Peace Efforts, received an honorary doctorate for her contributions to diplomacy, peacebuilding and sustainable development.

The partnership between the two institutions establishes a long-term platform through which universities can advance scientific excellence, support evidence-based policymaking and contribute to a more resilient, sustainable and peaceful Eastern Mediterranean.

Την Πέμπτη, 2 Ιουλίου, το Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου είχε την τιμή να φιλοξενήσει στις εγκαταστάσεις του τον Πρέσβη της Αραβικής Δημοκρατίας της Αιγύπτου στην Κύπρο, Αξιότιμο κ. Mohamed Zazou.

Η συνάντηση πραγματοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο της Πρωτοβουλίας για την Κλιματική Αλλαγή στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη Μέση Ανατολή (ΑΜΜΑ). Κατά τη διάρκεια της επίσκεψης, ο Πρόεδρος του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, Καθηγητής Σταύρος Μαλάς, παρουσίασε το έργο του Ινστιτούτου και τους στόχους της Πρωτοβουλίας.

Ακολούθησε εποικοδομητική συζήτηση για ζητήματα που αφορούν την κλιματική αλλαγή, την περιφερειακή επιστημονική συνεργασία και την ενίσχυση της ανθεκτικότητας της ΑΜΜΑ.

Στο πλαίσιο της επίσκεψης, ο Πρέσβης ξεναγήθηκε επίσης σε ερευνητικά εργαστήρια και σημαντικές υποδομές του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου.

On Thursday, 2 July, The Cyprus Institute had the honour of hosting the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Cyprus, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Zazou, at its premises.

The meeting took place within the framework of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate Change Initiative. During the visit, the President of The Cyprus Institute, Professor Stavros Malas, presented the Institute’s work and the objectives of the Initiative.

This was followed by a constructive exchange of views on issues related to climate change, regional scientific cooperation, and strengthening the resilience of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

As part of the visit, the Ambassador had the opportunity to visit some of the Institute’s research laboratories and key facilities.

Την 1η Ιουλίου, ο Δήμαρχος Λεμεσού, κ. Γιάννης Αρμεύτης και ο Πρόεδρος του Ινστιτούτου Κύπρου, Δρ. Σταύρος Μαλάς, υπέγραψαν νέα Συμφωνία Ερευνητικής Συνεργασίας (2026–2031), ενισχύοντας περαιτέρω την μεταξύ τους στρατηγική συνεργασία.

Η συμφωνία αποτελεί σημαντικό βήμα για την επιστημονική υποστήριξη του Δήμου Λεμεσού στην υλοποίηση του Climate City Contract και της πορείας της πόλης προς την κλιματική ουδετερότητα έως το 2030, στο πλαίσιο της Ευρωπαϊκής Αποστολής για τις 100 Κλιματικά Ουδέτερες και Έξυπνες Πόλεις.
