The PermaVET - EU Project – Permaculture in Vocational Education and Training EU project is close to an end! Throughout the last 2 years, Digital Kompetent - Fit für die Zukunft, from Germany 🇩🇪, coordinated the project which was also formed by Polish Farm Advisory, from Poland 🇵🇱, Citizens In Power / Πολίτες Σε Ισχύ, from Cyprus 🇨🇾, and Escola Profissional Espinho, from Portugal 🇵🇹.

PermaVET aims at making use of the permaculture concept to increase awareness about climate change among VET trainees in various sustainability-relevant sectors such as Gastronomy and Electronics and at developing vocation-specific competencies in order to reduce energy use, save resources and process sustainable organic food. To achieve this goal, the consortium developed training material based on inputs from experts in relevant areas and pilot-tested the material in VET schools in Germany, Poland, Cyprus and Portugal.

In specific, the material available is:
➡️1 training module to introduce the concept of permaculture addressed to all VET trainees; 🌳
➡️1 training module addressed to VET trainees from cooking/gastronomy areas; 🥗
➡️1 training module addressed to VET trainees from electronic/mechatronic areas; 💡
➡️1 international recipe book with recipes based on traditional dishes from Germany, Poland, Cyprus and Portugal using organic foods 📖

➡️Learning educational videos (with English subtitles) ⏯

The material created is now made public in an OER format in English, German, Polish, Greek and Portuguese in the project of the website and the partnership invites you to make use of it for professional and academic/educational purposes!

On 15.12.22, ZAUG implemented a Multiplier Event in Germany, online. Adult education centres, vocational schools, educational institutions, teachers and permaculture practitioners had the opportunity to learn more about the successful results of our project. Our website, the videos and the created materials were presented and introduced. A lively exchange took place.

A permaculture practitioner reported on the possibilities of fermenting and presented some interesting examples. We also delved into the world of wild plants, what effects they have and that they are often misunderstood, but can be wonderfully and easily integrated into everyday dishes, whether at home or in a restaurant.

Everyone found the event very interesting and positive and talked about synergy opportunities and what great potential permaculture has for the profession and education.

🎯One of the main objectives of our PermaVET project is to teach VET trainees in cooking how to use and handle products from sustainable, ecological agriculture for a constantly growing business field.

📒This curriculum gives them an additional qualification so that they can later work in catering establishments with ecological and healthy concepts.

In this video, students and teachers from the Culinary Arts Programme of Intercollege, Nicosia, Cyprus, had the opportunity to learn about:

📌Permaculture and the importance of product seasonality in Permaculture Products
📌The Treatment of Permaculture Products, Storage, and Ways of Preservation
📌The Processing - preparing and arranging permaculture products

During the cooking training, the trainees developed various recipes with local and seasonal permaculture products and cooked delicious and appealing meals with these ingredients. 🥬🍆🍅

Last November 30, CEPROF had the great pleasure of hosting the Multiplier Event of the PermaVET - EU Project in Portugal, Espinho!

In this event, where representatives of VET schools and organizations of the municipality and journalists were gathered, the final results of the project were presented!

Moreover, a workshop on how to create a small project and then implement it on a big scale, on a farm, was also organised!

The event was a success and CEPROF strongly believes that participants left the event able to recognise the potential of the permaculture concept in education!

🎉The Multiplier Event of our PermaVET - EU Project took place in Nicosia, Cyprus on the 29th of November with great success! 🤩
VET educators, VET students, journalists, agriculture experts, stakeholders, and policymakers had the opportunity to discover permaculture and its positive impact on the environment.
💻Our online platform and the methodology followed for producing our educational materials have been presented, whilst we also analyzed both the results and materials of the PermaVET project.
After the presentation, the participants tried our practical activities, focusing on smart agriculture. More specifically, we developed a soil moisture monitoring system using the Arduino microcontroller, an LCD screen, and a soil moisture sensor! 🌿

The partners from the PermaVET - EU Project have participated in the project's Final Meeting.

After almost 2 years of developing the project, it is now time to make available and present the final results.

For that purpose, each partner will implement a Multiplier Event in the next few days: one in each participating country (Germany, Cyprus, Portugal and Poland).

The Lens of Permaculture – New ways to look at old problems

In her article, Leanda Care describes how progress and developmental improvements in business need not rely on shifts in paradigm. Strategic change generally occurs incrementally, spurred by inspirational thinking or resourcefulness. Intensively obtained knowledge from formal business qualifications also offer advantages from new ways to measure and analyse business-related activity, and from looking at the existing landscape from new vantage points.

Regenerative agriculture is a conservation and rehabilitation approach to food and farming systems. It focuses on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, supporting biosequestration, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of farm soil.

Regenerative agriculture is not a specific practice itself. Rather, proponents of regenerative agriculture use a variety of sustainable agriculture techniques in combination. Practices include recycling as much farm waste as possible and adding composted material from sources outside the farm. Regenerative agriculture on small farms and gardens is often based on philosophies like permaculture, agroecology, agroforestry, restoration ecology, keyline design, and holistic management. Large farms are also increasingly adopting such techniques, and often use "no-till" and/or "reduced till" practices.

Agroforestry is one of the common permaculture practices that uses the interactive benefits from combining trees and shrubs with crops or livestock. It combines agricultural and forestry technologies to create more diverse, productive, profitable, healthy and sustainable land-use systems. Trees or shrubs are intentionally used within agricultural systems, or non-timber forest products are cultured in forest settings.

Forest gardening/food forests involve systems designed to mimic natural forests. Forest gardens, like other permaculture designs, incorporate processes and relationships that the designers understand to be valuable in natural ecosystems.

Since weather conditions influence yield crops, weather stations become vital for agricultural and permaculture processes.

The development of a personal and portable weather station is one of the projects addressed in the training modules of the PermaVET project which will be available soon, free of charge, on the project's website: https://permaveterasmusproject.eu/
