Professor Georgios Ellinas and Senior Research Associate Dr. Christian Vitale represented the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the 2026 China–CEEC Conference on Innovation Cooperation, held in Ningbo, China, from 8 to 11 September 2026. The conference promoted scientific, technological, and innovation cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs).

During the event, they presented the Center and the EUSOME Excellence Hub project, highlighting the Center's research activities and expertise in intelligent systems, autonomous systems, and unmanned aerial systems.

They also took part in the China Innovation Tour for CEECs in Ningbo, visiting research centers, universities, and companies. The visits focused on these areas of mutual interest and explored potential avenues for future research, innovation, and technology cooperation with Chinese organizations.

Congratulations to KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence faculty member Angelos Marnerides on his appointment to the Cyprus Defence Industry Council, an advisory body reporting directly to the President. This recognition reflects KIOS's growing expertise in the technical dimensions of security for critical national infrastructures — including the defense sector.

Take a snapshot of the Final Demo Event of the COCOON EU-funded project!

Coordinated by the Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου | University Of Cyprus and the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, COCOON developed an integrated software system to protect Europe's electricity networks from cyberattacks — achieving over 98% threat detection accuracy and operator alerts in under 5 seconds.

KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence was present at the 28th Annual Conference of the Euro Working Group on Transportation (EWGT 2026), which brought together researchers and practitioners to advance the application of operations research methods, mathematical and statistical models, and computational algorithms in transport analysis, planning, and operations.

Our Research Associate Charalambos Kyriakou presented a method for road condition assessment using drone imagery and artificial intelligence. The approach detects pavement damage and analyzes how defects are distributed across the road surface, helping identify areas that may need attention and supporting faster, more informed maintenance decisions. This work was carried out within the context of the Evoroads EU project.

The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence research team presented work on AI for Mobile Health at the 2026 IEEE Conference on Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (IEEE CIBCB 2026), held in Athens, Greece.

Dr. Pavlos Nicolaou, Research Associate, introduced deep learning and Foundation Models for forecasting daily behaviour from smartphone and wearable data, with participant-level personalisation reducing forecasting error by up to 60%. This work was carried out in collaboration with Dr. Artemis Kontou, Senior Research Associate, Dr. Kleanthis Malialis, KIOS Alumnus, and Asst. Prof. Panayiotis Kolios. Dr. Nicolaou also chaired the technical session on Methodological Foundations, Uncertainty & Emerging Applications.

KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence hosted the Final General Assembly Meeting (7-8 September) and the Final Demo Event (9 September) at its premises, key milestones as the COCOON project heads toward its conclusion at the end of September.

Over its lifetime, COCOON developed and tested trustworthy cyber protection solutions for Electrical Power and Energy Systems, validating them in four production-grade pilots across Greece, Spain, and the Netherlands, and delivering real improvements in situational awareness and operator training.

As project coordinator, KIOS welcomed partners and high-level guest speakers, including Michail Bletsas, Governor of the National Cybersecurity Authority of Greece, Marios Pieri, Commissioner of Communications of the Republic of Cyprus, and Vaia Karathodorou, CEO of the Regional Coordination Centre for Southeast Europe, for three days of results, discussions, and live demonstrations.

Congratulations to all partners for their collaborative effort to deliver advanced cyber protection technologies to enhance the cybersecurity and resilience of modern electricity networks. Thank you also to our distinguished guests for accepting our invitation to participate.

Cyber-Physical Systems bring new threats and cyber-attacks that exploit their inherent complexity and heterogeneity, with significant impact on their security and resilience. The KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence research team addressed these challenges with a strong presence at the 2026 IEEE International Conference on Cyber Security and Resilience, held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 3 to 5 August 2026.

Our team presented:
🔸 A framework introducing novel technologies aiming to address wildfire risks and enhance critical infrastructure resilience, developed within the SPARROWEU project in collaboration with SupportCY | Bank of Cyprus.
🔸 The HEPHAESTUS wildfire framework, a tool for real-time disaster simulation integrated into the Cyprus Digital Twin platform to study and understand the impact of wildfires on critical infrastructures.
🔸 The ACTING Project platform, an interoperable cyber-range environment for cyber defence training that supports automated scenario deployment, trainee evaluation and scoring, and the ex*****on of realistic multi-domain cyber exercises.
🔸 A lightweight cyber range for smart energy systems that simulates realistic IT/OT cyberattacks and their physical consequences. Using a photovoltaic plant scenario, the work demonstrated how an IoT compromise can escalate into wider infrastructure disruption, while also assessing human response through a Green Team framework.
