We need to reduce the plastic in our oceans. Watch this video and understand how single use plastic is really bad for our oceans and the planet.

Here is more about the need for us to reduce plastic in our lives. If you dive then please try to reduce plastic in your lives, especially single use plastic. Think about your purchases and the packaging the come in. Drink bottles are by far the most plastic I see while diving.
Plastic bottle litter on beaches up 43%, conservationists say - BBC News The Marine Conservation Society says more than 8,000 bottles were picked up during its Great British Beach Clean Up, a rise of 43% on 2014.

Another story that continues the need for choosing a good instructor, don't just pick a dive centre because of price, talk to the instructor that will teach you before you commit to that shop and instructor. If you feel they are not for you then pick another shop.

As divers we should be more aware of this huge problem. It amazes me to see how much plastic I encounter while diving in some sites. But we don't see the bulk of what is really in the ocean because it is constantly breaking down into smaller pieces but not "bio"degrading. I have mentioned this before we all should look at what we buy I terms of packaging and the life I what we buy, do we really need more things especially if they are made out of plastic and especially single use plastic like water bottles etc.
There's Rage-Inducing New Data On The Amount Of Plastic In The Ocean Scientists: Up to 37 times more floating microplastics than previously estimated.

For all students and lovers of the sea, this is great news. I have been reading about Calypso for a number of years rotting away, hoping somebody would save her from the scrap heap. At one point I was thinking of starting a Kickstarter project to try and save her. But now she will be ok!! I was luck enough to stand on the deck of Calypso when I was kid. Happy news.

Here is an interesting article about shark attacks in North Carolina this year. Note that even with the attacks it is really unlikely that diverse will get attacked. There are a few pointers on how to minimize the risk as well.
