A Classroom that is Student, and not Teacher, driven are more productive

When a classroom is created that is more student driven than teacher the classroom becomes more proactive.
This does not mean that the teacher is becoming less active or partially removed or erased from the focus point of the students. On the contrary such classroom becomes more strategic and efficiently productive. As we move further towards student-centered classrooms we prefer to give the students more power in the lesson and allow them to do more work. As a result, instead of the teacher giving answers to the students all the time, we encourage the students to contribute what they already know to the lesson. This of course can be done through various methods. Eliciting is an effective student centered type of a classroom. The teacher tries to obtain information about what her students do or don't know. This technique is helpful as a diagnostic tool, allowing teachers to easily determine what their students need, without having to waste time rehashing content already covered in class. Eliciting combined with quizzing also creates a learner-centered environment as it prompts students to think about the chosen topic in a broader sense, allowing students to share what they know by answering to questions and convey what they know with their peers. There is much you can elicit from students such as language knowledge, background information, general knowledge, opinions, feelings, associations, ideas, questions and answers, etc. Elicitation and quizzing allows students to exchange ideas and tap into their own collective knowledge. Furthermore, research supports the notion that students are more likely to retain new content through elicitation as it helps to make the teaching and learning of new knowledge more relevant to students.
