ASTEROID DAY is a global movement that helps protect Earth from asteroids.

It is a global awareness campaign where people from around the world come together to learn about asteroids, the impact hazard they may pose, and what we can do to protect our planet. Since 2016 the KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY as the Regional Coordinator for Asteroid Day in Cyprus conducts events nationwide. The KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY during the year in its programs, workshops and a

stronomy courses emphasises the importance of the knowledge about asteroids. MISSION

Asteroid Day takes place annually on June 30. It is a global awareness campaign where people from around the world come together to learn about asteroids, the impact hazard they may pose, and what we can do to protect our planet, families, communities, and future generations from future asteroid impacts. Asteroid Day is held each year on the anniversary of the largest impact in recent history, the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia. A relatively small asteroid, about 40 meters across or the size of a modest office building, devastated an unpopulated area about the size of a major metropolitan city. Regionally organised large and small events are held on Asteroid Day, and range from lectures and other educational programmes to live concerts and broader community events, to raise public awareness of the need for increased detection and tracking of asteroids. BREAKING NEWS! A new interstellar object, temporarily named A11pl3Z, has been just discovered...

BREAKING NEWS! A new interstellar object, temporarily named A11pl3Z, has been just discovered. It’s the third one ever found. We will show it live, online: join us from the comfort of your home.

The new interstellar object A11pl3Z was discovered on 1 July 2025 by the ATLAS Survey.

So far, only two previous interstellar objects traveling across the Solar System were found: 1I/ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019.

The Virtual Telescope Project will show this exceptional object live, online, on 3 July 2025, starting at 22:00 UTC.

In Memory of Fred Espenak



Me and the team of the KITION PLANETARIUM OBSERVATORY (CYPRUS) express our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues for the loss of our beloved Fred Espenak.

A unique person and scientist, very well known worldwide as "Mr Eclipse" for his impressive and respected work and knowledge in astronomy and especially the Solar Eclipses.

“Mr. Eclipse,” passed away on June 1, 2025, at his home in Arizona.

Fred was one of the people who gave as advice in our early stages back in 2008 related to Solar Eclipses and astronomy outreach. We would like to express one more time publicly how grateful we are for Fred and how much we respect his work and appreciate his support.

His passion for astronomy and eclipses and his will to inspire and educate us and the new generation left a large impact in the field of Astronomy, Education and Culture.

May hs soul rest in peace. 🌹
