EMU RANKS THE 1ST IN CYPRUS AND 3RD IN TURKEY IN THE WORLD’S YOUNG UNIVERSITY RANKINGS

Times Higher Education (THE), UK-based publisher of the world’s most widely referenced university rankings, announced the ranking of the best young universities in the world for 2023, which included universities that started education in the last 50 years.

EMU Continues Its Strong Rise

Despite the increase in the number of universities listed compared to last year, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) increased its position from 153rd to the band of 101-150 this year, ranking 1st in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the island of Cyprus. 2 other universities from TRNC and 3 from South Cyprus achieved to appear in the list. Ranking as the 1st in TRNC as it was last year, EMU shared the 1st place with the University of Cyprus and the University of Nicosia across the island. On the other hand, KoƧ University appeared in the first place followed by Sabancı University in second place in Turkey. This year EMU managed to increase its place in the list, appearing in the 3rd place along with Ƈankaya University.

Total of 605 Universities Appeared in the List
A total of 605 universities were included in the list. Nanyang Technical University from Singapore appeared in the first place as the world leader. Last year, 539 universities were included in the list. The ranking allows especially younger institutions to be compared among themselves in terms of publication, citation, quality of education and internationalization. The THE Best Young University Ranking 2023, which ranks young universities under the age of 50 worldwide according to their education quality, scientific research, bibliographic citations, international visibility and industrial revenue, was determined using the performance scales of THE World University Rankings.

ā€œEMU’s Rise in World Rankings is a Well-Deserved Achievementā€

Releasing a statement on the topic, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın noted that EMU’s rise from the 153rd rank to the 101-150 band is a well-deserved success in the said ranking published by the international independent university ranking institution. Prof. Dr. Hocanın also pointed out that its progress in the world rankings is a reflection of the right steps taken. Congratulating all EMU staff who contributed to the success of EMU, Prof. Dr. Hocanın also underlined that EMU will continue to work on quality education, research and community service with an increasing graph, being aware of its responsibility to be among the best universities in the world.

OLASUBOMI IGINLA AINA PAID A VISIT TO EMU RECTOR PROF. DR. AYKUT HOCANIN IN HIS OFFICE

"Olasubomi Iginla Aina, member of the (Honorary) Excellence Leadership of the British Empire, Director of the Lightup Foundation Association, and Global NGO Director, paid a visit to Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın, the Rector of Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), in his office. During the visit, which took place on Monday, 22 May, 2023, at 14:30, Aina expressed their intention to listen to the experiences of Nigerian students in the country throughout their higher education and share the acquired knowledge in Africa. Aina also expressed great happiness to be at EMU and receive up-to-date information from Nigerian students. The visit highlighted the significant contributions of international students at EMU to research activities as research assistants in postgraduate programs.

During the visit, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hocanın shared information about EMU's activities and the situation of Nigerian students studying at the university. Prof. Dr. Hocanın stated that EMU, which hosts more than 1000 academic staff from 24 different countries, provides quality education to approximately 15,000 students from 104 countries. Also mentioning that there are nearly 30 student clubs operating under the EMU International Activity and Student Societies Unit, and these clubs elect their own leadership to organize social and cultural activities promoting their countries and cultures throughout the academic year, Prof. Dr. Hocanın also provided examples of the opportunities provided to EMU graduates and the achievements of Nigerian graduates. At the end of the visit, possible collaboration opportunities between the organizations Aina is affiliated with and EMU were discussed, and Prof. Dr. Hocanın presented a special gift from EMU to Aina."

EMU RECTOR PROF. DR. AYKUT HOCANIN VISITS IRAN

Prof. Dr. Aykut Hocanın, the Rector of Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), along with his delegation, traveled to Iran from the 10th to 13th June, 2023, to meet with EMU alumni, their families, and prospective students, as well as to hold various meetings. Accompanying Prof. Dr. Hocanın on the visit to Iran were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sahand Daneshvar from EMU Faculty of Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering and İsmail Bayramoğlu from the EMU International Promotion Office.

Participation in the Education Fair
During the first two days of his visit to Iran, Prof. Dr. Hocanın participated in the Tabriz Education Fair, organized by the Caucasian Universities Association (KÜNİB) at the Tabriz Royal Palace Hotel. Prof. Dr. Hocanın was also invited to deliver speeches at the opening ceremonies of the fair and provided information about EMU to the participants. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Hocanın had personal meetings and exchanged ideas with Alirıza Monadi, the Chair of the Education Committee of the Iranian Islamic Shura Council, Rıza Rahmani, the former Minister of Industry, Mining, and Trade of Iran and the Deputy of the Islamic Shura Council, Dr. Reza Ameri, the Chair of the Education Advisory Commission affiliated with the President of Iran, and Ƈetin Taner, the Consul General of the Republic of Turkey in Tabriz.

Established Communication with Hundreds of Prospective Students
Prof. Dr. Prof. Dr. Hocanın and the delegation met with prospective students and their parents in a designated area at the fair venue. They established contact with over 150 prospective students. Prof. Dr. Prof. Dr. Hocanın was presented with a plaque of appreciation by Prof. Dr. Ramazan Korkmaz, the President of KÜNİB, and Dr. Kamran Pashai, the Co-President of KÜNİB, to express gratitude for his participation in the fair. In return, Prof. Dr. Hocanın presented a Lefkara lacework frame, a traditional Cypriot gift, to Prof. Dr. Korkmaz and Dr. Pashai.

Visit to Tabriz University
Prof. Dr. Hocanın had a meeting with Dr. Safar Nasrollahzadeh, the Rector of Tabriz University, to discuss possible collaborations between EMU and Tabriz University. All the vice rectors of Tabriz University were present at the meeting. Following a fruitful discussion, the parties agreed to sign a cooperation protocol during a ceremony to be held at EMU. After the meeting, mutual gifts were exchanged.

Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Hocanın gave an interview to the local media in Iran to promote EMU. During the gala night held as part of the fair, representatives from all universities and government officials gathered together. The evening also featured regional music performances from both Turkey and Iran.

Visit to Islamic Azad University of Tabriz
As part of the program, Prof. Dr. Hocanın met with Dr. Hosein Ostadi Sefidan, the Rector of Islamic Azad University of Tabriz, and his delegation. They discussed potential collaborations between the Faculty of Medicine at EMU and Islamic Azad University. The meeting took place at Imam Sajjad Hospital, operating under the Islamic Azad University. The delegations visited the hospital and shared information about their facilities. A positive outcome was achieved, and an agreement has been settled regarding internship opportunities for EMU students. It was also agreed that the parties would meet at EMU to sign a cooperation protocol.

Invitation to Dinner at the Consulate General
Prof. Dr. Hocanin and his delegation were invited by Consul General Ƈetin Taner, representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, to attend a dinner organisation held at the consulate. The dinner also hosted rectors from universities in the Republic of Turkey, along with their accompanying delegations.

Meeting with the EMU Community in Tehran
On the third day of his visit to Iran, Prof. Dr. Hocanın traveled to the capital city, Tehran, where he met with EMU students, their families, and EMU alumni. Prof. Dr. Hocanın also had discussions with officials from the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. Later, Prof. Dr. Hocanın joined the EMU community for a dinner organısatıon. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Hocanın had meetings at the Iranian Ministry of Health. Following the dinner, Prof. Dr. Hocanın returned to the country with his accompanying delegation.
