António Costa spent this week on the island of Cyprus and could not find a sentence for the tragedy off Northern Cyprus.
The President of the European Council came to the South, posed for photographs alongside Nikos Christodoulides, and declared that Europe needs Cyprus reunified. Not a word about the Filo Jet, about those still missing beneath 554 metres of water, or about the families burying their dead a few miles away.
A condolence costs nothing and takes ten seconds. It was not given, because acknowledging that Turkish Cypriots exist is something Brussels cannot do in front of its hosts.
This is the same institution now presenting itself as the actor best placed to resolve the Cyprus question.
The EU has no seat at the negotiating table and no standing to request one. It has been held hostage here by a single member state for twenty-two years, since it admitted a divided island and abandoned its promise to end our isolation.
