Last week we participated in the masterclass 'World Heritage meets Main Street' organized by Stichting Monumentenfonds Curacao. It was great to learn from experts and to work with students and professionals on resilient city planning for the World Heritage site of Punda and Otrobanda

In 2022, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (13th Oct) will focus on Target G of the Sendai Framework: “Substantially increase the availability of and access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to people by 2030.” The urgency to achieve this target was strengthened in March 2022 by the announcement made by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres that “the United Nations will spearhead new action to ensure every person on Earth is protected by early warning systems within five years.”
The primary goal of the Sendai Framework is to avoid creating new and reduce existing risk. But when that is not possible, people-centered early warning systems and preparedness can enable early action to minimize the harm to people, assets and livelihoods.

For some time now, Jamanika Consultancy Services and Urban Adapters in Otrobanda, Curaçao have been working closely together in the field of concept development, branding and business support. Leading aspects are strategic positioning, sustainability and resilience.
Therefore it was a challenge to apply the aspect of resilience to our own organizations, because recently both entities were confronted with an unpleasant surprise in the form of a break-in in the joint office and training space. It had just been put into use for a week. The impact is there. The damage too. Planned activities for customers and local residents unfortunately have to be postponed. "We walk the talk. We’re moving forward in resilience.” That’s the positive turn we want to give to this impactful event and we’d like to pass this on to society. We continue, adapt, bounce back and are determined to serve society even better than before.

Organizational resilience is the ability of an organization to anticipate, prepare for, respond and adapt to incremental change and sudden disruptions in order to survive and prosper.
Having more resilient organizations is a key component towards achieving more resilient communities because it is organizations that deliver essential services and provide employment for a large proportion of the community.
In 2021, as in 2020 the pandemic was still a major threat and disruption to the world. How resilient did your organization get through 2021? Did you have to take measures to be more resilient? Was Covid-19 the main source of problems? Or did you experience other disruptions?
Because the Caribbean islands are highly dependent on imports, they are vulnerable to disruptions in the supply chains. Due to the major impact Covid-19 has (had) on the supply chain of organizations in this region, both companies and citizens are experiencing inconvenience and financial hardship.
Central Bureau of Statistics Curaçao recently published the results of the Business Survey 1st half of 2021? https://www.cbs.cw/_flysystem/media/resultaten-conjunctuurenquete-1e-helft-2021_1.pdf

Urban Adapters has collected data for you on the number of liquidations and new registrations at the Chambers of Commerce of Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten in 2019, 2020 and the first quarter of 2021. Unfortunately, no data were available for Bonaire and Suriname about this theme.
Despite the severe impact of Covid-19 on the workforce and companies on these islands, we notice an increase of new registrations at the Chambers of Commerce in the first quarter of 2021. Hopefully this trend will continue. We will come back to this as soon as the figures for the whole of 2021 are known.
