Free download link of my dissertation "The Sound of Silence: Ideology of National Identity and Racial Inequality in Contemporary Curaçao" (2016) - Angela E. Roe, PhD

This is what we have been working on since the docu Sombra di Koló came out in 2014.

This dissertation addresses racism in contemporary Curaçao—a former Dutch colony in the Caribbean that remains a component of the Kingdom of The Netherlands. The dissertation theorizes racism as a partially hidden constituent of the island’s ideology of national identity, which throughout its history has emulated hybridity before being influenced, more recently, by multiculturalism. The research’s main objective is to uncover the ways race and racism have been entangled with Curaçao’s hegemonic ideology of national identity, a reality too often omitted and always under-theorized in Dutch and Dutch Caribbean scholarship.

Using historical, ethnographic, statistic, and discourse analysis
data, the dissertation reveals how profound the operations of race have been on Curaçaoan society, and on all Curaçaoans on the island and in the diaspora. It discusses the historical formation of ideologies of race and national identity in Curaçao, to contribute to the explanation of the current state of race relations on the island. It exposes the silencing impacts that the hegemonic ideology of national identity has had on individual Curaçaoans’ understanding of self through the reflexive presentation of an intergenerational family history. The dissertation ends with ethnographic analytic descriptions of five neighborhoods differently located in Curaçao’s racial/spatial order, which reveal the mechanizations of multiculturalism and the prevalence of racism.

I still cannot believe it, that I am the winner of the prestigeous Premio Boeli van Leeuwen / Boeli van Leeuwenprijs 2015!!! With Sombra di Koló / The Shadow of Color, and the academic work upon which the film is based. Hester Jonkhout, Selwyn de Wind and myself are deeply honored for this incredible acknowledgement.

I believe that this price is yet another victory in breaking the taboo on race and racism. A year ago very few people openly talked about race and racism in Curacao. But now the certificate says (my translation):

"As proposed by the independent Jury and the Board of Advisers in this, and based on the decision of the Council of Ministers of Curaçao d.d. 2 sept 2015, the government of Curaçao awards Ms. drs. Angela E. Roe the Premio Willem. C. J. (Boeli) van Leeuwen 2015 for her original, inspiring, vision widening, interactive, and at times perhaps confronting scientific research activities regarding the experience of race and skin color in Curaçao in particular. She does this among others through the by her directed documentary film "Sombra di Koló". Her work makes it possible to address still concealed taboos around ethic relations in our community, comparable to an important part of Boeli van Leeuwen's work. One of the goals of Ms. Roe in this is to contribute to "social healing and enhancement of nation building," which are themes that were also most dear to Boeli van Leeuwen."

The certificate is signed in person by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Culture.

Through this award the highest elechons of the Curaçaoan nation both acknowledge the taboo on race and the need to remedy the inequality it entails.

My dream just came true...
