"The US Treasury Department imposed new measures against Venezuela’s oil sector in 2020, levying secondary sanctions against two Rosneft subsidiaries. The Russian energy giant was forced to shutter its Venezuela operations and transfer its assets to a Kremlin-owned holding company. Rosneft had been carrying as much as 60 percent of Venezuela’s output before rerouting it to other destinations. Secondary sanctions, coupled with low oil prices and contracted global demand due to the coronavirus pandemic, have forced PDVSA to halt production in several projects and joint ventures as the company runs out of storage space for unsold crude."

Elliott Abrams threatened to “go after” shipping companies that continue to transport Venezuelan crude.

In the mid- to late-20th century, the U.S.backed the decades-long dictatorship of François Duvalier, which robbed and neglected the nation while, under pressure from USAID, opened the doors to a proliferation of foreign NGOs and oriented Haiti’s production toward exports rather than local food production.."

One reason: "Russia and Venezuela have had close military ties for decades. During boom times, oil-rich Venezuela has been a major buyer of Russian military hardware — with contracts for fighter jets, tanks, small arms and other equipment totaling more than $12 billion, according to Americas Quarterly. More recently, Russia has helped Venezuela develop a cryptocurrency intended to help it evade U.S. sanctions." Read the rest in the article below.

The Tu-160 nuclear bombers in Venezuela reminds the United States that Russia can still project military might into the Western Hemisphere.

Preparing for
"In de periode 2011-2018 werd onze wereld aan een grondige geopolitieke transformatie onderworpen. Voor Europa lijkt het wel of alle zekerheden op het vlak van veiligheid, economie en ecologie onderuit werden gehaald. Het partnerschap met de Verenigde Staten is sterk onder druk komen te staan sinds president Trump, de relaties met Rusland verslechterden door de crises in Oekraïne en Syrië, in het Midden-Oosten ontaardde de ‘Arabische Lente’ in burgeroorlogen en regionale oorlogen in Libië, Syrië en Jemen en is een machtsstrijd gaande tussen soennieten en sjiieten.
Prof. dr. David Criekemans wil doorheen al deze verwarring duidelijkheid brengen. Er breekt voor Europa een nieuwe periode aan. Brussel kan het zich in het buitenlands beleid niet langer veroorloven om in exclusieven met de Verenigde Staten te denken. In de nieuwe geopolitiek-multipolaire wereld moet Brussel een balanspolitiek met alle ‘polen’ voeren: Washington, Moskou, Beijing, Tokio, Londen,… Met een scherpe geopolitieke analyse bespreekt prof. Criekemans de gevaren en kansen.

"For decades, China's presence in Africa has largely focused on economic, commercial and peacekeeping activities. Now, Beijing is building on that by establishing greater military links to protect its national assets on the continent and gain greater geopolitical influence."

From military bases to joint training exercises, Beijing is looking to establish a greater defense profile in Africa.
