Immerse yourself in Cuban music and culture
This annual one week hands on program takes place in Havana , the music capital of Cuba. Participants live and study with Cuba's top international artists taking group lessons in an authentic environment on all the various instru
ments of Cuban percussion. Participants are exposed to learning history , culture and context of the development of music in Cuba with recognized Ethnomusicologists and professional musicians. Included are visits to historically significant sites, Old Havana and concerts every night at the Fiesta del Tambor ( Havana Rhythm and Dance Festival) . Giraldo Piloto ( Cuba's top drummer , bandleader and composer is artistic director and collaborator with KoSA on this event.KoSA is a major sponsor of this festival. Enrollment is open to everyone from around the world and of all all levels from beginners to professionals. This is a university credited program ( course) which is optional .The credits are offered through the University of Castleton, Vermont, USA and are transferable elective credits. Cuban Music workshop overview:
In this 7 day program, participants are introduced to the history and development of the music and culture of Cuba and the different music styles that developed in Cuba over its history from the traditional to the popular music of today. Participants take group classes daily learning the special important techniques of congas, timbales, bongos , drumset and other instruments as well as learning the most popular Cuban rhythms . Daily Group playing includes percussion jam sessions , combo performances with special guest Cuban musicians ( piano, bass, guitar) throughout the week . Classes take place in the hotel meeting rooms which become our classrooms for the program. Each night we attend the concerts of the festival which take place in several of the major theatres in Havana ( Teatro Mella , Karl Marx Theatre ). There is great opportunity for personal exploration and mingling at cafes, after hour jazz clubs and general people to people contact and exchange. KoSA runs accredited programs worldwide . KoSA Cuba program is in its 15th year attracting participants worldwide from US, Canada, Mexico, Italy , Switzerland., Columbia, Chile, Argentina, Belgium, Norway, France . Credits offered through Castleton University , Vermont ,USA for 3 credits ( Graduate or undergraduate). Programs includes all instruments . Land packages are offered for Single occupancy, double occupancy as well for accompanying non-participants
Cost : $1905.00 USD (Single), $1800.00 USD (double), $1545.00 USD (double non participant) fee includes:
- Lodging for 7 nights hotel
- 3 meals per day
- Private full time air conditioned bus and driver
- Bilingual assistant for the full duration
- All translations in classes and outings
- Entry to all the festival concerts each evening
- KoSA personnel with full time Cuba cell phone for emergency contact
