Today is International Museum Day, and we celebrated it the best way we know - with the most iconic paintings from the National Museum of Serbia and a little Serbian art vocabulary.

In Serbia, International Museum Day is officially observed on May 18, but in practice it is celebrated over several days, and sometimes even for a whole week.

📅 Main date: May 18
🌙 Most popular event: Museum Night (usually the Saturday closest to that date)
🏛️ Many museums organize programs several days before and after (exhibitions, workshops, free admission)

In Serbian tradition, the very first Easter egg painted, always red, is called Čuvarkuća. It literally means "the housekeeper."

It is kept in the home for the entire year - quietly watching over the family, believed to bring good health, protection, and blessing to everyone under that roof. 🏡

When the next Easter comes, the old Čuvarkuća is finally retired and a brand new one takes its place, freshly painted and full of promise.

Such a small thing to carry so much meaning.

Do you know that Serbs keep a red Easter egg (čuvarkuća) for the whole year? 🥚

Here are some more interesting Easter traditions in Serbia:

🌅 You should get up early on Easter and stay awake past midnight. If you fall asleep before midnight, you will be sleepy and lazy until the next Easter!

💧 Wash your face with special water infused with cornel, basil, and a red Easter egg.

🥚 Children should be touched with a red Easter egg — this will keep them rosy-cheeked and healthy throughout the whole year.

🍬 On this day, adults hide eggs and sweets around the house, and kids go on a sweet hunt!

🎁 If a guest comes into the house on Easter, the host will first gift them a painted egg, and then offer food and drink.
