We were delighted to welcome Ilija Jerkovic, the newly elected Treasurer of European Liberal Youth (LYMEC), to our office!
We have known Ilija for many years as a dedicated member of the Serbian liberal youth organisation Mladi PSG - Omladina Pokreta slobodnih građana. We are therefore especially pleased that, since April, he has also been serving as a member of the European Liberal Youth Executive Board.
It is vital that young people from non-EU countries know that Europe’s door remains open to them and that they have an important role to play in shaping its future.

For those of you that speak German ...

In Episode #6 of the podcast “Rajsferšlus – Politics That Brings People Together” by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, Dušan Dinić and Toni Skorić speak with Serbian scholar Tijana Perović, who currently lives in Berlin.

Tijana talks about the circumstances surrounding her move to Germany and the brain drain, which, given its intensity, is now having a significant impact on the Western Balkan states. As an active researcher, she also examines the research and development sectors in Germany and Serbia and considers what she would do differently if she were the minister in charge.

Between 11 and 19 July 1995, more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were murdered by Bosnian Serb forces in and around Srebrenica. These atrocities were not spontaneous. They were systematically planned and executed. The international community stood by and watched.

With Germany among the countries leading the initiative, the UN General Assembly designated 11 July as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom commemorates the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. Thirty years later, we continue to work towards reconciliation and a shared future within the European family, both in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Serbia.

Our colleague running the International Journalist Program of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom visisted Belgrade to get himself acquainted with the situation of media freedom in Serbia. The foundation’s program is aimed at journalists who can no longer work freely and without repression in their respective countries. To date, the program has been working with partners in Russia, Belarus, and Turkey. As things stand, Serbia may soon be added to the list of countries where a free press is unwelcome.

This weekend, FNF Western Balkans joined our partners from Naša stranka and Pokret slobodnih građana at the ALDE Party Congress 2026 in Vienna, celebrating 50 years of the ALDE Party – Liberals and Democrats for Europe, the first pan-European political party. Delegates also re-elected Svenja Hahn as ALDE Party President.
Beyond the Congress, we met with Helmut Brandstätter MEP, Renew Europe's rapporteur for the Western Balkans, and our friends from NEOS to discuss EU enlargement, democratic reforms, and strengthening liberal cooperation across Europe.
As the Western Balkans continues its European journey, strong liberal partnerships remain essential to advancing freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. ❤🇪🇺

We’re on our way to Vienna! Naša stranka, Pokret slobodnih građana and are looking forward to the 2026!

Thanks to the wide range of opportunities for exchange offered by the institutions in Brussels, liberals from EU member states have many chances to meet throughout the year. For liberals from non-EU member states, the annual congress of the ALDE Party – Liberals and Democrats for Europe is one of the few opportunities to “be part of it”. We’re really looking forward to seeing you all!

Sarajevo Pride came to a close this weekend.
is proud to have been able to participate for the first time as a partner organization of this important event. A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers from bh.povorkaponosa, as well as to our guests David Chalmers and Arno Seidel.

The sheer number of hateful comments shows that some people still find it difficult to let others live their lives the way they want to. That’s why events like this, which remind society that it’s not just made up of the mainstream, are so important. Thank you so much for your dedication, dear friends! We look forward to continuing to support BH Pride and all those fighting for fundamental equality with all our hearts.
