With heavy hearts, we share that The Workshop's in-person classes will be paused by the end of this month. 💔

In-person classes have formed the very core of The Workshop since our opening in April 2017.

However, as we intensify our efforts to secure long-term support, it is necessary to temporarily pause our in-person language classes. Nevertheless, we're committed to keeping the spirit of learning alive by continuing with online classes wherever possible. 🌐📚

We want to extend a huge thank you to all of our supporters! We have raised an incredible 4,674 USD via our GoFundMe campaign, and we are so thankful for and blown away by the support we have received from former and current volunteers, friends, and family. But we’re not done yet!

This fundraising will allow us to stay open until the end of the year as we continue to apply for new funding sources. We have yet to be successful in any major grant applications. Veliko hvala svima koji su nas podržali! Sakupili smo neverovatnih 4,674 USD kroz našu GoFundMe kampanju. Oduševila nas je podrška koju smo dobili od naših bivših i sadašnjih volontera, prijatelja i porodice. Ali nije sve još završeno!

Ova kampanja će nam pomoći da ostanemo otvoreni do kraja godine, dok apliciramo za nove izvore finansiranja. Tek nam predstoji uspeh u potrazi za većim grantom, ali ne prestajemo da aktivno tragamo za novim partnerstvima kako bi Radionica ostala održiva, i nastavićemo da nalazimo i apliciramo za nove grantove ubuduće.

Introducing our Education Manager, Đorđe!

1. Tell us about yourself

Hi! My name is Đorđe and I studied Serbian Literature at the University of Belgrade. Learning new languages has always brought me joy and I felt inspired to teach as well as learn. I have worked as a teacher in high schools and elementary schools and I am happy that these experiences have led me here. I also love cricket, and I plan to work on my certificate to become a cricket coach. In my spare time I enjoy writing, reading and sports.

2. What do you do at The Workshop?

I am an Education Manager at The Workshop and my work involves scheduling volunteer work both for the Workshop and for the online classes that we provide. During office hours I work as a supervisor at the Workshop and give Serbian and English language classes to our students. I also translate our Social Media posts and try to help with recruiting new volunteers and reaching out to organizations that we want to partner with in our educational and sports projects.

3. Why did you decide to join The Workshop?

I wanted to be a volunteer the first time that I heard about the Workshop. I already learned to love different aspects of teaching and what got me hooked was the idea that we can give people a better chance of building a future for themselves in Serbia, through language learning. When the time came for me to become part of the Workshop’s team, I was thrilled by the opportunity to get fully involved in its work.

4. What have you enjoyed about working at The Workshop so far?

I enjoyed teaching Serbian and following the progress of our students. I also love when our students take center stage and share some of their hobbies and interests or they become the teachers and teach us concepts from their native language. In those moments, the Workshop space seems even more precious and special to me.

Also, I really love being in touch with our online students and volunteers. A unique bond exists between those students and teachers and it is such a nice feeling just being a part of the effort and energy being put forth from both sides.

1. Reci nam nešto o sebi

Zdravo! Ja sam Đorđe i završio sam Srpsku književnost i jezik sa opštom književnošću na Filološkom fakultetu Univerziteta u Beogradu. Učenje jezika me je oduvek radovalo i osećam se podjednako inspirisanim da učim druge kao i kada sam učim nov jezik. Radio sam kao nastavnik srpskog jezika u srednjim i osnovnim školama i drago mi je da su me ta iskustva dovela do Radionice. Takođe, veliki sam ljubitelj kriketa i planiram da pohađam kurs za trenera u budućnosti. U slobodno vreme uživam u pisanju, čitanju i sportu.

2. Koja su tvoja zaduženja u Radionici?

Radim kao asistent na projektu Radionice i moja glavna zaduženja tiču se raspoređivanja volontera koji nam pomažu u radu sa učenicima i pomaganje oko zakazivanje časova za naše online učenike i nastavnike. U toku radnog vremena imam ulogu supervizora u Radionici i pored toga držim časove srpskog i engleskog jezika našim učenicima. Takođe, radim prevode za naše objave na društvenim mrežama, pokušavam da pomognem sa pronalaženjem novih volontera, i pomažem saradnju sa partnerskim organizacijama i udruženjima sa kojima osmišljavamo i realizujemo naše edukativne i sportske projekte.

3. Zašto si odlučio da se pridružiš Radionici?

Znao sam za Radionicu i pre nego što sam postao njen član. Želeo sam da volontiram i da upotrebim svoje znanje jezika kako bih pomogao migrantima i tražiteljima azila kojima učenje jezika otvara vrata ka novim mogućnostima u životu. Kada se ukazala prilika da postanem deo tima Radionice, bio sam oduševljen prilikom da se u potpunosti uključim u njen rad.

4. Šta ti se najviše dopalo otkad si se pridružio Radionici?

Volim da predajem srpski i da gledam kako naši učenici napreduju. U nekim prilikama, naši učenici zauzmu centralno mesto i pričaju nam o svojim hobijima, ljubavi prema sportu ili muzici, ili nam objašnjavaju osobenosti svog maternjeg jezika. U tim momentina, The Workshop prostor mi se čini naročito posebnim i dragocenim.

Saradnja sa našim online nastavnicima i učenicima je jedno jako prijatno iskustvo, i u tome uživam iz nedelje u nedelju. Između tih učenika i nastavnika postoji jedinstvena veza, i jako je lep osećaj biti deo toga i posmatrati trud i volju koji se ulažu sa obe strane.
