Са велики задовољством вас обавештавамо да је из штампе изашла нова публикација Византолошког института САНУ. У питању је двотомна монографија „Barbarians, Rhomaiоi and Those in Between. Integrating the Christians of the Central Balkans into the Byzantine Empire (late 10th– mid-13th century)” настала као резултат рада на пројекту „From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi. The Process of Byzantinization in the Central Balkans (late 10th –mid-13th Century)”. Реч је о трогодишњем пројекту (2022–2025) финансијски подржаном од стране Фонда за науку Републике Србије, у оквиру Програма ИДЕЈЕ (акроним пројекта: BarByz_10–13; број пројекта: 7748349). У пројектном тиму под руководством др Бојане Крсмановић учествовало је 12 истраживача Византолошког института САНУ, који је био самостални носилац пројекта. Поред теоријских, током пројектног циклуса спроведена су и 4 теренска истраживања (на подручју Републике Србије, Републике Северне Македоније и Републике Грчке). Основни циљ теренских истраживања био је израда документације за дигиталну базу „Сакрална топографија Охридске архиепископије – СТОА”, чије су основе постављене током рада на пројекту. Поред теренских истраживања организовано је и 5 студијско-истраживачких боравака у иностранству, а одржана су и 3 округла стола у Палати САНУ, на којима су учешће, уживо или путем интернет платформи, узели еминентни стручњаци из земље и иностранства. Из пројектног истраживања проистекло је и 19 чланака које су чланови пројектног тима публиковали у међународним научним часописима и тематским зборницима, док су резултати пројекта у више наврата промовисани у домаћим и иностраним институцијама.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the publication of a two volume monograph by the Institute of Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA): “Barbarians, Rhomaioi and Those In Between. Integrating the Christians of the Central Balkans into the Byzantine Empire (late 10th – mid-13th century)”. Our new edition is the principal outcome of the research project: “From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi. The Process of Byzantinization in the Central Balkans (late 10th – mid-13th century)”. The three-year project (2022–2025) was funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia within the IDEAS Programme (project acronym: BarByz_10–13; project number: 7748349). The research team, led by Dr. Bojana Krsmanović, consisted of twelve researchers from the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the SASA. In addition to historical research, the project included four field surveys conducted in the territory of the Republic of Serbia, the Republic of North Macedonia and the Republic of Greece. The primary objective of these fieldwork activities was the compilation of data for the digital database “Sacral Topography of the Archbishopric of Ohrid – STOA”, the basic framework of which was created during the project. In the course of the project, five short research stays abroad were conducted and three round-tables were held at the SASA, with the participation – both in person and online – of distinguished scholars from Serbia and abroad. Members of the project team have published nineteen articles in international peer-reviewed journals and thematic volumes. Project findings have been presented to scholarly audiences both in Serbia and internationally.

We are honored to inform you that the publishing house Palgrave Macmillan, within the series New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture, has published a book by Principal Research Fellow of the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Dr. Predrag Komatina, entitled ”Church Policy of Byzantium after the Triumph of Orthodoxy (843–886)”. The monograph is an amended and reworked version of the Serbian edition „Crkvena politika Vizantije od kraja ikonoborstva do smrti Vasilija I”.

Српски комитет за византологију, Византолошки одбор САНУ и Византолошки институт САНУ организују традиционалну, осму по реду, Националну конференцију византолога, од 27. до 29. октобра 2025. године у Београду. Први дан скупа биће одржан у Свечаној сали Палате САНУ, а наредна два дана у сали Аудиовизуелног архива САНУ. Научни одбор Конференције чине академик Љубомир Максимовић, академик Вујадин Иванишевић (председник), дописни члан САНУ др Весна Бикић, др Бојана Крсмановић, др Срђан Пириватрић, др Љубомир Милановић, доц. др Дејан Џелебџић, др Маја Николић, доц. др Милош Живковић, др Јована Шијаковић, др Бојана Павловић и др Милош Цветковић. Организациони одбор чине др Бојана Павловић (секретар), др Срђан Пириватрић (председник) и др Милош Цветковић (секретар). Предвиђено је да Конференција буде подељена у три дела, тематски, општи и дискусиони. Средишња тема Конференције је "Византијски град и његово наслеђе". The Serbian Committee for Byzantine Studies, together with the Board for Byzantine Studies of the SASA and The Institute for Byzantine Studies of the SASA, are organizing the Eighth National Conference of Byzantine Studies, 27–29 October 2025 in Belgrade. The conference consists of three parts: thematic session, free communications and discussion forum. The main topic of the conference is “Byzantine City and its Heritage”. Free communications comprise Byzantine topics, whereas the discussion forum is entitled “Challenges of Modern Byzantology”. Members of the Scientific board of the conference are: academician, dr. У току рада на пројекту „Од варвара до хришћана и Ромеја. Процес византинизације на централном Балкану (крај 10. – средина 13. века)” , који финансијски подржава Фонд за науку Републике Србије, у оквиру програма ИДЕЈЕ (акроним пројекта: BarByz_10-13, бр. пројекта: 7748349), у Палати САНУ је 14. октобра 2024. године одржан трећи по реду Округли сто, под насловом „From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi”. Руководилац пројекта др Бојана Крсмановић је учеснике скупа упознала са досадашњим резултатима рада на припреми двотомне монографије, у којој би требало да буду изложени домети пројектног истраживања, након чега је уследила плодна дискусија у којој су, поред сарадника на пројекту, учешће узели и гости из земље и иностранства.

The third round-table, entitled „From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi”, took place as an in-person and online meeting in the SASA Palace on October 14, 2024. The content of the monograph in preparation was presented by Dr. Bojana Krsmanović, who manages the project. The two-volume issue includes the final results of the project “From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi. The Process of Byzantinization in the Central Balkans (late 10th – mid-13th century)”, which is supported by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, Program IDEAS (acronym BarByz_10-13, Grant No. 7748349). Both domestic and international colleagues were involved in the discussion.

Као резултат сарадње Византолошког института САНУ и Филозофског факултета Универзитета у Нишу, током марта, априла и маја месеца 2024. године уприличен је циклус предавања у којем је неколико сарадника Института представило резултате својих истраживања, укључујући и оне проистекле из рада на пројекту „Од варвара до хришћана и Ромеја. Процес византинизације на централном Балкану (крај 10. – средина 13. века)” [акроним пројекта: BarByz_10-13, бр. пројекта: 7748349], који финансијски подржава Фонд за науку Републике Србије. Сарадници Института су са студентима Департмана за историју у Нишу дискутовали о различитим темама из византијске историје, књижевности, као и историје уметности и архитектуре.

As part of the cooperation between the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Niš, associates of the Institute held a round of lectures during March, April and May 2024. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to present the results of our research, including those resulting from the work on the project “From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi. The Process of Byzantinization in the Central Balkans (late 10th – mid-13th century)” [acronym of the project: BarByz_10-13, Grant No. 7748349, funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia] to the students of the Department of History in Niš and to discuss with them various topics regarding Byzantine history, literature, art and architecture.

Zbornik radova Vizantološkog instituta celebrates its 60th issue (https://www.zrvi-visanu.rs/index.php/en/) in the 75th year since the establishment of the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The two volumes contain 52 original scholarly contributions, 8 of which stem from the project “From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi. The Process of Byzantinization in the Central Balkans” (acronym: BarByz_10–13, grant no. 7748349).
The anniversary issue, which was published with help from the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia and the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, is now available in print format.

The second round-table meeting of the project “From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi. The Process of Byzantinization in the Central Balkans (late 10th – mid-13th century)” which is supported by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, Program IDEAS (acronym BarByz_10-13, Grant No. 7748349), entitled “The Social and Ideological Component of Byzantinization”, was held in the SASA Palace on March 14, 2024. Speakers were Dr. Bojana Pavlović, Dr. Tamara Ilić and Dr. Stanoje Bojanin, who presented their current results in identity, socio-legal and cultural problems of the process of Byzantinization. The presentations were followed by a fruitful discussion.

On March 1, Dr. Tamara Ilić, Research Associate at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, held a lecture “Three Novels of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos in the Nomokanon of Saint Sava” and presented part of the results of her research within the project “From Barbarians to Christians and Rhomaioi. The Process of Byzantinization in the Central Balkans (late 10th – mid-13th century)”. Под покровитељством JESH програма Аустријске академије наука (The Austrian Academy of Sciences’ Joint Excellence in Science and Humanities – JESH programme) научни сарадник Института др Милош Цветковић боравио је у Бечу периоду између 1. октобра и 28. децембра 2023. године. Студијски боравак је подразумевао истраживање у оквиру пројекта "Models of Byzantine Provincial Government in the Balkans under the Komnenoi and Angeloi (1081–1204)" које је спроведено у Византолошком одсеку Института за средњевековна истраживања Аустријске академија наука (Institut für Mittelalterforschung der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften [IMAFO] – Abteilung Byzanzforschung) уз свесрдну помоћ домаћина и супервизора др Михаила Ст. Поповића.

Dr. Miloš Cvetković, Research Associate at the Institute for Byzantine Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, was awarded a scholarship by the Austrian Academy of Sciences’ Joint Excellence in Science and Humanities – JESH programme for a research stay in Vienna between 1 October – 28 December 2023. The research within the framework of the project "Models of Byzantine Provincial Government in the Balkans under the Komnenoi and Angeloi (1081–1204)" was carried out at the Institute for Medieval Research (IMAFO) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (the Department of Byzantine Research) with the earnest support of the host and supervisor Doz. Mag. Dr. Mihailo St. Popović.

У периоду од 15. до 23. октобра 2023. године сарадници Византолошког института САНУ спровели су четврто теренско истраживање у оквиру пројекта – „Од варвара до хришћана и Ромеја – процес византинизације на централном Балкану (крај 10. – средина 13. века)“, уз подршку Фонда за науку Републике Србије (програм „Идеје“, бр. пројекта: 7748349). Теренски рад обухватио је обилазак црквених споменика на подручју Охрида, Струге, Преспе и Касторије. Реч је о прилично обимној и типолошки разноликој групи цркава, чија се изградња у науци везује за средњовизантијски период (IX–XIII век). Поред црквених споменика, чланови пројектног тима су посетили и неке значајне тврђаве на датом подручју (Охрид и Касторија) и Музеј у Охриду.

The Process of Byzantinization in the Central Balkans (late 10th – mid-13th century)” was carried out between October 15th and 23rd with the support of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, Program Ideas, Grant No. 7748349. The research included church monuments in the area of Ohrid, Struga, Prespa and Kastoria. This concerns a rather extensive and typologically diverse group of churches, whose construction is linked in the scholarship to the Middle Byzantine period (9th-13th century). In addition to the church monuments, members of the project team also visited some significant fortresses in the given area (Ohrid and Kastoria) and the Museum in Ohrid. was carried out between October 15th and 23rd with the support of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, Program Ideas, Grant No. 7748349. It is with great joy and honor that we share the news that academician Mirjana Živojinović, our long-time associate and renowned historian of Mount Athos and Hilandar Monastery, has been awarded the Order of Saint Sava, a high decoration conferred by the Serbian Orthodox Church. The event was held on February 29, 2024 at the Patriarchal Palace in Belgrade. His Holiness Archbishop of Peć, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci, and Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije presided over the ceremony.
