"Goal Accomplished!--I had been trying for close to 2 years to change how I "popped up" on my board. The way I had been doing it was slowing me down and preventing me from progressing. Edgar and I worked on ways to change how I approached the pop up and to fix it. After 2 days I was using the new method 60% by the end of my time 100%. I was able to bottom turn, catch the wave at a higher point and get longer rides up and down a greater part of the face of the wave. “Great Instructor For All Ages--Having recently moved from the Canadian Prairies to Tamarindo, learning to surf was a top priority for me even at my, umm, advanced age of 59. With Edgar's high level of expertise to guide me, I am well on my way to checking it off my "bucket list"! His ability to quickly assess his students capabilities and adjust the lesson to accommodate them is second to none. "My Favorite Surf Instructor--I stayed in Tamarindo for 3 weeks so I've had plenty of time to experience different styles of surf instruction. Hands down, my lesson with Edgar was the best. Here are some specific aspects of his lesson that made him stand out:
1) Professionalism: He isn't there to chat with other instructors/locals or get paid for me to watch him surf (a common issue with some instructors).
2) Concise Feedback: He never brought up too many corrections after a wave so I never became overwhelmed.
3) Deep Breathing: I'm from NYC and I think he could smell the tension in me. I'm not sure if he does this with every student, but he asked me to sit up and breathe deeply after each wave. It really helped!
4) Energy: Some of the other instructors working for larger companies do multiple lessons a day with multiple students in each lesson. It understandably tires them which makes them less effective as instructors. Edgar had more than enough energy to stay engaged throughout the entire lesson.
5) Goal Oriented: He also likes to set goals before going out which makes it easier to stay focused.
Aside from the lesson, his English is excellent so I was able to grill him for information about Tamarindo as well as other parts of Costa Rica. He is Costa Rican so if you want to support a business owned and operated by a Tico (which is not the norm here) do not hesitate to contact him."-Kenley Cole
