VISION STATEMENT
Founder and Artistic Director Elia Arce created USEKRA as a unique place in the middle of the jungle in Costa Rica, a few minutes from the Caribbean Sea, where artists, scholars, anthropologists, sociolog

ists, biologists and other international creative thinkers will gather to challenge each others’ perspectives in order to create art and scholarship that that will push the boundaries of established standards. In this part of the world the Indigenous, African and Asian communities coexist. By continuously questioning and embracing change as a living organism, these three ethnic groups will be the inspiration from
which the Center will begin to conceive its research practices. Periodically, USEKRA CCI will extend invitations to selected artists/researchers and provide subsidies for their stay using funds secured as a result of its 501C3 tax status. This property, surrounded by lush vegetation and serene silence (when the howling monkeys are not visiting!) is the perfect get-away research community for artists and scholars developing new and solid creative discourses, who yearn to be challenged by considering fresh perspectives from which to see themselves as citizens of the world. OPERATIONS
The Center will be available to other artists/researchers to rent during select times of the year. Located one hour from the airport in the port town province of Limón, USEKRA:CCI will offer weekly and monthly rental rates. Artists/researchers can come individually or in a group and stay for a minimum of two weeks, by renting one or more of our casitas/studios and shared common space (kitchen, dining, laundry, library meeting room). For an additional fee, the Center offers the possibility of hiring your own cook for the duration of your stay.

In the Pointe-aux-Chênes community on Louisiana’s coast, water permeates every aspect of life. It’s how folks make their living, trawling bays as shrimpers or crabbers. It’s why their houses are raised off the ground and flood protection levees encircle them like a fortress. It’s why roads ...

Why does it take being publicly called out for these museums to do the right thing? White artists have been stealing our images for generations but it’s the galleries & museums that validate this theft.

Excellent! It’s time we had more Black conservators given that this is a field of the visual arts that can provide great job opportunities rarely taken by Black people. I love that lately more emphasis is being placed on fields of study related to the art adjacent occupations like curating and conservation as ones Black are pursuing.

“As we collectively pass this tipping-point moment and the work of restitution expands, the challenge will be to ensure that each and every act of return is not a moment of closure or “disposal,” but the opening up of new possibilities for different forms of remembrance and repair, and for new equitable relationships in understanding and addressing the enduring nature of cultural dispossession and colonialism.”

As the global consensus on restitution passes the tipping point, some skepticism towards these sudden, improbable Damascene conversions towards restitution is probably justified.
