During our weekly Earth Lab, students have started building a herb spiral in the garden.

A herb spiral is a raised, winding structure that creates different microclimates in a small area.

The top stays warm and dry, while the lower sections retain more moisture and shade, allowing plants with different needs to grow close together. Stones help store heat.

Through this, students learn how water, sunlight, and soil conditions shape plant growth, and how herbs can be grown and used.

Durante nuestro Earth Lab semanal, los estudiantes han empezado a construir una espiral de hierbas en el jardín.

Una espiral de hierbas es una estructura elevada y en forma de espiral que crea distintos microclimas en un espacio reducido.

La parte superior se mantiene más cálida y seca, mientras que las zonas inferiores conservan más humedad y sombra, lo que permite que plantas con diferentes necesidades crezcan juntas. Las piedras ayudan a almacenar el calor.

A través de este proceso, los estudiantes aprenden cómo el agua, la luz solar y las condiciones del suelo influyen en el crecimiento de las plantas, y cómo las hierbas pueden cultivarse y utilizarse.

Our first and second graders spent the morning at Choco Tour, following the path of chocolate from the cacao tree to the final product, within the same environment where it begins.

They saw how cacao grows in its natural setting and how local conditions shape its quality, following each stage of the process to understand how that carries through to the final result. Tasting the raw fruit and preparing traditional recipes helped ground this understanding in direct experience.

Making their own chocolate allowed them to apply what they had observed, reinforcing their understanding through practice.

Los estudiantes de primero y segundo grado pasaron la mañana en Choco Tour, siguiendo el recorrido del chocolate desde el árbol de cacao hasta el producto final, dentro del mismo entorno donde comienza.

Vieron cómo crece el cacao en su entorno natural y cómo las condiciones locales influyen en su calidad, siguiendo cada etapa del proceso para entender cómo esto se refleja en el resultado final. Probar el fruto en su estado natural y preparar recetas tradicionales les permitió comprenderlo desde la experiencia directa.

Elaborar su propio chocolate les dio la oportunidad de aplicar lo observado, reforzando su comprensión a través de la práctica.

Creativity is where curiosity meets courage.

At Real World School, art is a living expression of who we are becoming. Through every brushstroke our students practice genuine self-expression.

Creativity awakens Curiosity, one of our Social-Emotional Learning lenses, inviting students to explore the unknown with wonder. It gives them permission to ask their own questions and follow their ideas wherever they lead.

In that space, creativity becomes a way of learning and a way of understanding themselves.

Because when children feel free and inspired to express who they are, education becomes transformation.

At our school, creativity is essential.

La creatividad es el lugar donde la curiosidad se encuentra con el coraje.

En Real World School, el arte es una expresión viva de quienes estamos llegando a ser. Con cada pincelada, nuestros estudiantes practican una expresión genuina de sí mismos.

La creatividad despierta la Curiosidad, uno de nuestros lentes de Aprendizaje Socioemocional, e invita a los estudiantes a explorar lo desconocido con asombro. Les da permiso para hacerse sus propias preguntas y seguir sus ideas hacia donde las lleven.

En ese espacio, la creatividad se convierte en una forma de aprender y en una manera de comprenderse a sí mismos.

Porque cuando los niños se sienten libres e inspirados para expresar quiénes son, la educación se transforma.

Un pequeño pájaro gris estaba en el suelo cuando los estudiantes lo encontraron.
No había nido cerca. Tampoco se veía a la madre.

Se acercaron y empezaron a hacerse preguntas. ¿Cuánto tiempo llevaba ahí? ¿Qué necesita una cría de paloma? ¿La movemos o la dejamos donde está?

Buscaron información. Compararon lo que encontraban. Miraron hacia los árboles hasta que alguien ubicó el nido. A partir de ahí, hicieron un plan entre todos.

No había una lección planeada para esto. Solo una situación que pedía atención y cuidado. Y un grupo de estudiantes dispuesto a detenerse y entender qué hacer.

A small gray baby bird was sitting on the ground when the students found it.

They gathered around and started asking questions. How long had it been there? What do baby doves need? Should we move it or leave it?

They looked up information. Compared what they were finding. Scanned the trees until someone spotted the nest. From there, they made a plan together.

There wasn’t a lesson planned for this. Just a situation that asked for attention and care. And a group of students willing to slow down and figure it out.

The other week, our After-School Club Fair day took place. Students and their families spent time learning about what happens after the bell rings. They met teachers, asked thoughtful questions, and looked closely at how each club connects to real interests and real skills.

From Ninja Warrior and Mini Vets to Robotics, Theater, Film, Spanish, Sports, Parkour, and Cheer, the focus was on real experiences. Hands-on work. Trying something unfamiliar. Learning in ways that feel active and personal.

After-school clubs give students space to grow through doing. They turn interests into skills and make room for enjoyment along the way. We’re excited for another semester of meaningful learning that continues well past the final school bell at RWS.

La semana pasada se llevó a cabo nuestra Feria de Clubes After-School. Estudiantes y familias compartieron tiempo conociendo lo que sucede cuando termina la jornada escolar. Hablaron con maestros, hicieron preguntas con atención y exploraron cómo cada club se conecta con intereses reales y habilidades que se desarrollan en la práctica.

Desde Ninja Warrior y Mini Vets hasta Robótica, Teatro, Cine, Español, Deportes, Parkour y Cheer, el enfoque estuvo en experiencias auténticas. Actividades prácticas. La oportunidad de probar algo distinto. Aprender de una manera activa y cercana.

Los clubes after-school les dan a los estudiantes espacio para crecer a través de la experiencia. Ayudan a transformar intereses en habilidades y hacen lugar para el disfrute en el proceso. Nos entusiasma comenzar otro semestre de aprendizaje significativo que continúa mucho después de la última campana en RWS.

Every Thursday, students in grades 1-12 step into real, hands-on work with the land, growing food, caring for soil, and learning how nature sustains daily life. Week by week, learning becomes real-world understanding.

Cada jueves, estudiantes de 1º a 12º se conectan con el trabajo real y práctico junto a la tierra: cultivan alimentos, cuidan el suelo y aprenden cómo la naturaleza sostiene la vida cotidiana. Semana a semana, el aprendizaje se convierte en comprensión del mundo real.

El inicio de un nuevo año escolar trae una energía distinta. Nuevas posibilidades. Nuevas preguntas. La sensación compartida de que aún hay mucho por aprender, juntos.

En Real World School, crecer siempre ha significado algo más que lo académico. Aprender aquí también tiene que ver con cómo los estudiantes se comprenden a sí mismos, cómo se relacionan con los demás y cómo se mueven por el mundo con cuidado.

El aprendizaje socioemocional no es algo que simplemente se añade. Está profundamente arraigado en lo que hace que esta escuela sea lo que es.

Miramos hacia atrás al aprendizaje socioemocional en el que participaron nuestros estudiantes el año pasado, guiados por tres lentes.

⭐️ Apreciación, notar lo bueno y permitir que se haga visible.

⭐️ Expresión auténtica, practicar la honestidad con uno mismo y con los demás.

⭐️ Dedicación, aprender a permanecer, incluso cuando algo se siente incómodo.

Al comenzar este nuevo año, llevamos esa base con nosotros mientras dirigimos nuestra atención a tres nuevos lentes: Curiosidad, Empatía y Ecuanimidad.

Estamos entusiasmados por comenzar otro año creciendo juntos.

At Real World School, growth has always meant more than academics. Learning here is also about how students understand themselves, relate to others, and move through the world with care.

Social-emotional learning isn’t something we simply just add on. It’s deeply rooted in what makes this school what it is.

We look back at the social-emotional learning our students engaged in last year, guided by three lenses.

A medida que el año llega suavemente a su fin, volvemos a esos momentos que guardan sentido.

Nuestro Festival de las Luces, celebrado al cerrar el semestre, nos regaló un espacio para pausar y mirar todo lo que este año trajo consigo.

La espiral, iluminada poco a poco vela a vela, se volvió un reflejo silencioso de los meses vividos y del cuidado, el esfuerzo y la presencia que los atravesaron.

Al mirar atrás, sentimos una profunda gratitud por la comunidad que dio forma a este año. Por todas las personas que estuvieron presentes con apertura y corazón.

Cerramos el 2025 llevando esa luz compartida con nosotros, y mirando hacia el nuevo año con calidez y esperanza.

As the year gently comes to an end, we find ourselves returning to moments that hold meaning.

Our Festival of Lights, celebrated at the close of the semester, offered a space to pause and reflect on everything this year carried.

The spiral, slowly illuminated candle by candle, became a quiet mirror of the months behind us and the care, effort, and presence woven through them.

Looking back, we feel deep appreciation for the community that made this year what it was. For everyone who showed up with openness and heart.

We close 2025 holding that shared light with us, and looking ahead with warmth for what the new year will bring.

This time of year invites us to lead with empathy and care.

On our campus, that includes Mariolas, Costa Rica’s native stingless bees. Their presence reminds us that care is an action and not a concept.

At Real World School, children learn empathy by practicing it. By noticing living things. By understanding that sharing space comes with responsibility. By learning that how we treat the small and vulnerable matters.

When children grow up learning to care for even the tiniest of beings, they carry that awareness far beyond the classroom, and far beyond this holiday season.

Esta época del año nos invita a actuar con empatía y cuidado.

En nuestro campus, eso incluye a las mariolas, las abejas nativas sin aguijón de Costa Rica. Su presencia nos recuerda que el cuidado es una acción y no un concepto.

En Real World School, los niños aprenden la empatía practicándola. Al observar a los seres vivos. Al comprender que compartir un espacio conlleva responsabilidad. Al aprender que la forma en que tratamos a lo pequeño y vulnerable sí importa.

Cuando los niños crecen aprendiendo a cuidar incluso a los seres más pequeños, llevan esa conciencia mucho más allá del aula, y mucho más allá de esta temporada festiva.

Real World School Talent Show - what a celebration of bravery, talent, and creativity. From the moment the show began, each student brought something meaningful to the stage.

Whether through movement, music, jokes, stories, or surprising ideas, every performance reflected personal expression and the joy of sharing.

Thank you, Maria Cardona, for opening the event with calm presence and heartfelt words. You helped set the tone for a welcoming and supportive space.

To every student who participated: your choice to show up and share was powerful. We saw your effort, your originality, and the pride in your eyes. That alone made this day unforgettable.

To all the families, staff, and friends who came to watch, thank you. Your presence made a difference. And to those who helped prepare, guide, cheer, and contribute in big or small ways - this was your celebration too.

We’re grateful to be part of a community where expression is encouraged and celebrated.

El Show de Talentos de Real World School fue una celebración hermosa de valentía, talento y creatividad. Desde que empezó la presentación, cada estudiante llevó algo significativo al escenario.

Ya fuera mediante movimiento, música, humor, relatos o ideas que sorprendieron, cada actuación mostró una voz propia y la alegría de compartir.

Gracias, Maria Cardona, por abrir el evento con serenidad y palabras sentidas. Contribuiste a crear un ambiente cálido y lleno de apoyo.

A cada estudiante que participó: elegir presentarse y mostrar su trabajo tuvo un impacto grande. Vimos el esfuerzo, la originalidad y el orgullo en sus ojos. Solo eso hizo que este día quedara grabado.

A las familias, al equipo de la escuela y a los amigos que vinieron a acompañar, gracias por estar presentes. Su compañía marcó la diferencia. Y a quienes prepararon, guiaron, animaron o aportaron de cualquier modo, este logro también es suyo.

Lunch at Real World School comes with intention behind it. Kids arrive at the table ready to eat, talk, and settle into a moment that feels shared rather than rushed.

The menu leans toward colorful, plant-forward food cooked from scratch. Bowls filled with fresh vegetables, grains, and sauces that carry real flavor.

Some foods become instant favorites. Others take time. That’s part of the process. Exploring what nourishes their bodies doesn’t happen in a single meal, it builds through curiosity and small moments of trying again.

Lunchtime connects to everything else they learn here. Community shows up at the table. Confidence grows with each new taste. And care becomes something they can feel. In themselves and in one another.

El almuerzo en Real World School nace de la intención. Los niños llegan a la mesa listos para comer, conversar y entrar en un momento que se vive en conjunto, no a las carreras.

El menú se inclina hacia comida colorida, basada en plantas y preparada desde cero. Platos llenos de verduras frescas, granos, legumbres y salsas con sabor real.

Algunos alimentos se vuelven favoritos al instante. Otros necesitan tiempo. Así es el proceso. Descubrir qué nutre sus cuerpos no ocurre en una sola comida; se construye con curiosidad y con esos pequeños intentos de volver a probar.

La hora del almuerzo se conecta con todo lo que aprenden aquí. La comunidad toma forma en la mesa. La confianza crece con cada nuevo sabor. Y el cuidado se vuelve algo que se siente. En ellos mismos y en quienes los rodean.

At first it looked like a simple game. Running across the schoolyard and teaming up as they went. But underneath all that movement was a full lesson in biology.

Our 6th and 7th graders were exploring food chains and survival strategies by stepping into the roles of herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores. They had to think fast, adapt, and pay attention to how each group depended on the others.

There was plenty of laughter and a few surprises along the way. And once the activity wrapped up, the conversations got even better. Students talked through their experiences and linked what they felt in the game to how ecosystems work in the real world.

When kids learn through experience, the ideas stay with them. They understand the natural world in a deeper way, and they practice how to navigate challenges together.

Al principio parecía un juego sencillo. Corriendo por el patio y formando equipos sobre la marcha. Pero detrás de todo ese movimiento había una lección completa de biología.

Nuestros estudiantes de 6º y 7º exploraron cadenas alimentarias y estrategias de supervivencia al convertirse en herbívoros, omnívoros y carnívoros. Tuvieron que pensar rápido, adaptarse y notar cómo cada grupo dependía de los demás.

Hubo muchas risas y algunas sorpresas en el camino. Y cuando la actividad terminó, las conversaciones se pusieron aún más interesantes. Los estudiantes hablaron sobre lo que vivieron y relacionaron esas sensaciones con el funcionamiento real de los ecosistemas.

Cuando los niños aprenden a través de la experiencia, las ideas permanecen. Comprenden el mundo natural de una forma más profunda y practican cómo enfrentar desafíos juntos.
